If you were a kid in the 1980's then you saw "The Last Starfighter", simple as that. Either you caught it on the big screen, or saw it replayed one of a million times on HBO or Super TV (bonus points for anyone that remembers Super TV!). Not only does it feature the guy that kills himself in "Halloween 2" by slipping in blood (Lance Guest), it features "Night of Comet" heroine Catherine Mary Stewart. "Starfighter" gave every arcade game playing pre-teen geek the hope that for every quarter pumped into "Zaxxon", a little signal made it's way into deep space letting a distant alien race know of your awesome gaming skills. And if you plugged enough quarters into the game, and played well enough...then who knows...maybe you too could fight off the "Wizard of Wor".
This is actually a fun little story about a kid stuck in a desert trailer park, acting as handyman for several octogenarian neighbors. He wants more, but looks like he'll be playing janitor for quite awhile longer as his request for a college loan gets turned down. He takes out his frustration on an army of intergalactic warriors via a videogame breaking the high score and "beating" the game. Turns out, there is more to beating the game than simply entering your initials in the hall of fame, and soon the teen finds himself whisked away to do battle among the stars for real.
Sure, it's corny. The special effect while fantastic for the time, do seem a bit dated (but not as badly as expected, and much better than quite a few modern productions), but this film is a lot of fun. If you haven't seen this film since it's last run on HBO when Reagan left office...then give it another shot. It will provide you with some great memories, and it's a flick even the kids of today will enjoy. Video Games, laser cannons, space ships, aliens...what's not to like?

The Last Starfighter [HD DVD] Specifications
At the time of its original release in 1984, this modestly budgeted sci-fi excursion had the distinction of offering some of the first examples of purely computer-generated animation, an apt (and frugal) special-effects solution for a movie with a plot line rooted in computer games. Both the computer-generated visuals and the arcade game now look quaint, but writer-director Nick Castle's affable, good- hearted adventure holds up nicely, thanks to a clever premise--the title game is actually a test for prospective starship pilots, planted by embattled aliens under siege from an evil invader. When a restless teenager (Lance Guest) racks up an impressive score, he finds himself spirited away to the besieged planet and thrust into the midst of an intergalactic war. Apart from Castle's skill at contrasting his extraterrestrial settings with the mundane details of his hero's earthbound life, the movie gets lift-off from two thorough pros, Robert Preston, who makes the alien recruiter, Centauri, a planet-hopping cousin to The Music Man's Harold Hill, and Dan O'Herlihy, the alien copilot, who suggests a scaly Walter Brennan. Older fans will snicker, but kids and young teens will find this rite of passage absorbing, while their folks will savor Preston's brash charm. --Sam Sutherland

Still great after 20 years - Carolyn N. Hill - Melbourne, Australia
I had this movie on VHS for years and years and it was one of those films that I just never got sick of. And then when dvd's came out, I eventually threw it away thinking 'I'll go and get it on dvd now'... and off course it hadn't been released on dvd. So this was a great find for me - and is still just as enjoyable today as it was 20 odd years ago. A great movie, a great adventure, fabulous for the kids and the special effects were cutting edge at the time and still hold up today. The special features on this special edition are fanastic too - educational as well as interesting.
10 out of 10 from me!
The Last Star Fighter - 2th Anniversary edition - Mark T. Von Seggern - Denver, CO USA
The Movie itself was exactly the same as the original - your probably saying well duh. I was expecting to see Will Wheaton in this version, but to no avail. I was kind of expecting to see some deleted scenes restored to no avail. All that was there was how the movie was made in 3 or 4 different ways. Not what I was looking for. But still a nice addition to my movie collection.
