Apollo 13 [HD DVD] Overview

NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon

Excellent Movie - C. Bennett - USA
This one is one of the best movie ever, the only bad for me was a HD and I need it on blu ray.

Apollo 13 widescreen dVD - R. Cook - Bristol, UK
The DVD was received in quick time from the USA in good packaging. Unfortunately I have not been able to review it as it will not play on any of my DVD players - Perhaps the sellar can advise that certain DVD will not play on UK DVD's. That said I am not put off using the sellar again as delivery and response time was good.

Meet the Fockers [HD DVD]

Meet the Fockers [HD DVD] Review

I have not seen too many sequels that are as good or better than the first movie. However, this is a classic with a continuation of the domination that Robert De Niro has over his daughter.

I never anticipated Ben Stiller's family being so different than what was betrayed in the first movie. I highly recommend watching both of these movies "back to back."

Meet the Fockers [HD DVD] Feature

Meet the Fockers [HD DVD] Overview

Meet the Parents found such tremendous success in the chemistry produced by the contrasting personalities of stars Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller that the film's creators went for broke with the same formula again in Meet the Fockers. This time around, Jack and Dina Byrnes (De Niro and Blythe Danner) climb into Jack's new kevlar-lined RV with daughter Pam (Teri Polo), soon-to-be son-in-law Gaylord (Stiller), and Jack's infant grandson from his other daughter for the trip to Florida to meet Gaylord's parents, Bernie and Roz Focker (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand in a casting coup). The potential in-laws are, of course, the opposite of Jack, a pair of randy, touchy-feely fun-lovers. The rest of the movie is pretty much a sitcom: put Bernie and Roz together with Jack, and watch the in-laws clash as Gaylord squirms. As with the original, there is a sense of joy in watching these actors take on their roles with obvious relish, and the Hoffman-Streisand-Stiller triumvirate is likeable enough to draw you in. But the formula doesn't work as well in Fockers mostly because much of the humor is based on two obvious gimmicks: Gaylord Focker's name, and the fact that Streisand's character is a sex therapist. As a result, the movie itself is more contrived and predictable, and a lot less fun than the original. The casting is grand, but one wishes more thought was put into the script.--Dan Vancini

Saw the Movie was not impressed.not too funny sadly. - Jose Lopez - Miami,Florida USA
This movie is not as funny as the first sadly, where the first meet the parents movie was hilarious this one lacks it, it's not that this movie is not Funny. it is. but not as much as the 1st one. Then you add in the new cast of characters it just didn't do it for me sadly. It could have been better, there is a 3rd installment rumored to come as of this writing which will be about the kids, let's hope it's better and funnier. Pass this one, go for the 1st. I rented it and was disappointed.

Fun, fun, fun movie! - Ekaterina Walter - Oregon, USA
Part 2 to "Meet the Parents", this movie is even more fun. Streisand, Hoffman, De Niro are all outstanding in this feature! What a great cast and a hilarious plot.

Not Even Close to "Meet the Parents" - Media Lover -
Let me just say, I LOVE "Meet the Parents." It's one of my favorite movies of all time.

Let me now say, this movie is NOTHING like meet the parents. The whole movie is based on two things:

1. Cheesy Sex Humor
2. Gross out gags

Nothing else from this film is memorable (except for the always amazing Robert De Niro reprising one of his best roles.) Gotta love Jack!

Skip this movie, see the first one.

Accepted (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Review

Check Price Now!

Accepted (directed by Steve Pink) is a humorous, thoughtful and smart take on college and what it truly means to achieve in life.

Bartleby Gaines (Justin Long) is a smooth talking, intelligent but lazy high school graduate that finds himself in a bad predicament; he is rejected from every college he applies to. To keep himself from becoming a failure in the eyes of his overly demanding parents (Mark Derwin and Ann Cusack) he creates The South Harmon Institute of Technology, a fake college. To the dismay of his best friend Sherman Schrader (Jonah Hill), he accepts himself into the college along with his friends (Maria Thayer, Adam Herschman and Columbus Short).

But when more than 100 students show up on the first day Bartleby must go to far greater lengths than he imagined to keep the charade up.

The movie's opinion on college and academics is refreshing. The college application process is brutal. Qualified students get turned down. Then there are students who slack in high school but are searching for a second chance. Bartleby's `fake' college shows that there are students who can succeed and discover themselves in college regardless of their past performances. It's good to know that there are colleges out there that accept even those that didn't get straight A's in high school or a perfect ACT score. In the process his college that was essentially fake at the beginning becomes more real and turns into more than merely a scheme to fool his parents.

One of my favorite characters in the movie is Glen played by Adam Herschman. His one liners and ability to snag pretty college co-eds is hilarious. He is a suave man that doesn't appear to be one. He proves that looks don't count half as much as personality.

Bartleby is another surprise. He is lazy but any audience member will be able to spot the genius bubbling under the surface. He also has witty and clever one liners that bite through the stereotypical Harmon students and the restrictions colleges place on students.

The only problem with Accepted that bugs me is the concept. It's unrealistic that they are able to start a college no matter how much money they have in their possession. The accreditation is also far-fetched. But it is a movie and I am willing to suspend reality. Movies are allowed to push the limits. The social commentary on colleges shows that reality was tested for a reason; to illustrate that while the movie's concept doesn't always make sense, neither does real life.

Universal Pictures Accepted - HD-DVD/DVD ComboFrom the producer of Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar comes a whole new school of thought: Accepted. When every college turns him down, Bartleby "B" Gaines decides to make one up. Welcome to the South Harmon Institute of Technology, where the students teach the classes, the dean lives in a trailer in the back, and Bartleby's on the way to scoring with the girl of his dreams. Accepted (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Specifications

Justin Long has been hovering on the edges of movies like The Break-Up and Dodgeball, providing little comic bursts that are often funnier than the rest of the movie. In Accepted, Long plays Bartleby Gaines, a fast-talking slacker who, when he gets rejected by every college he applied to, invents a phony college to get his parents off his back. Unfortunately, the website his best friend creates is too effective--hundreds of other rejects apply and are accepted. Instead of revealing the hoax, Gaines decides to forge ahead and let the students create their own curriculum, little suspecting that their school is obstructing the expansion plans of the nearby snobbish college. Accepted is much better than you might expect, given the low bar set by most campus comedies; it aims for, and sometimes achieves, the blend of slapstick and social satire that Animal House embodied. Long proves to be a charming leading man without losing his quirky comic sense and the supporting cast is consistently entertaining, particularly stand-up comedian Lewis Black, who delivers a variety of sardonic rants about society. Accepted's critique of conformism is glib--you wish they'd given it a little more bite--but it's still valid and a pleasant sliver of substance in an otherwise vapid genre. --Bret Fetzer

Flat movie - Patrick C. Pleter -
I won't waste my time reiterating what the other low reviews have covered; this is an uncreative movie to which one might psychologically masturbate if they were too incompetent to get into a decent university, and are now grumbling whilst flipping over the latest burger on the fryer -- in short, aimed at a moronic audience. Y'know, something Comedy Central would (and does) air over and over and over, well into 2020 (I just saw it on now, inspiring me to make this review).

The Omega Man [HD DVD]

The Omega Man [HD DVD] Review

This is the DVD version of the movie, and the Heston version too. I never knew about this movie before I came across it in the local public library.

I love science fiction, and enjoyed this movie. (I haven't seen the other two versions of this movie, nor have I read the book version.)

Being deaf, I relied on the closed captions, and they worked just fine.

I did find it strange that the power was still working two years after the catastrophe apparently occurs in the year 1975. Even back then the technology wasn't that good for such a thing to be possible. I wish they had tried a more plausible way of providing power.

A second inconsistency is that the eyes in the night folks are supposed to be sensitive to the light, which means the irises in the eyes should have been especially large so that it lets too much light in and therefore they can't see in the daytime. But in the movie the irises of the night folks are really small, and you'd expect that would mean they couldn't see at night without sunglasses to boot (so why wear sunglasses at all at night?) and would be able to see easily without sunglasses during the day. The filmmakers must have understood this optics stuff all backward.

Those were the only two inconsistencies I noticed when I watched this film.

BTW, a few of these reviews mention another car in the distant background in the opening moments of the movie, I missed that and will have to look for that car the next time I watch this movie.

I was really struck by the ending, and loved it.

The Omega Man [HD DVD] Specifications

Science fiction took a grim turn in the 1970s--the heyday of Agent Orange, nuclear peril, and Watergate. Suddenly, most of our possible futures took on a "last man on Earth" flavor, with The Omega Man topping the doom-struck heap.

Charlton Heston plays the government researcher behind the ultimate biological weapon, a deadly plague that has ravaged humanity. There are two groups of survivors: a dwindling band of immune humans and an infected, psychopathic mob of light-hating quasi-vampires. The infected are led by Mathias, a clever, charismatic man set on destroying the last remnants of the civilization that produced the plague. Heston has a vaccine--but he and the few remaining normals are outnumbered and outgunned. By day, he builds a makeshift version of the nuclear family (with Rosalind Cash as his afro-wearing, gun-toting little lady). They plan for the future while roaming freely through an empty urban landscape, taking what few pleasures life has left. By night, they defend themselves against the growing horde of plague victims. Both a bittersweet romance and a gothic cautionary tale, The Omega Man paints a convincing portrait of hope and despair. It ain't pretty, but it's a great movie. --Grant Balfour

Just because it is a old, doesn't mean it's good - one guys opinion - Jacksonville, Florida
I recently watched this film through the instant view option on Netflix. Heston did a really good job in the Ape films, so I figured I would give this one a shot. Here, Heston overacts, and the motivation behind the way the behavior of the cult is silly, and worse, inconsistent.

Simply put, this film is aweful! Not terrible enough to be campy. Just bad enough to make you want your time back.

Omega Man - G. Medina -
Omega Man is pretty cheesy and dated: fake blood, bad costumes, laughable dialogue, and solidly anchored in the '70s. Vicent Price's "Last Man on Earth" is a superior version of "I am Legend" IMHO.

The Dirty Dozen [HD DVD]

The Dirty Dozen [HD DVD] Review

I love this movie. My Mon took me to see it along with 10 or so friends. I was 8 years old. Lots of violence, guns and explosions. Even the bad Americans are the good guys, the Nazis are the bad guys. All very politically incorrect stuff. The hanging scene, Marvin kicking Cassavetes ass, Telly Savalas perving out, Sutherland impersonating the general, Jim Brown dropping hand grenades onto evil gasoline soaked Nazi people trapped in a cellar, Brown's almost making it to the giant half track - and getting shot by a sniper using an INFRARED scope ... these are the coolest, best, funniest scenes in the history of film - at least for a 8 year old in 1967.

After the movie we went to the park and played Army. I had a steel toggle action full size toy cap-gun Luger. The thing would get a kid shot these days - it looked very real. I also had a plastic .45 caliber Thompson SMG like Tom Hanks used in "Saving Private Ryan." When you pulled the trigger it made a gun sound. (I liked it because the Sgt. in the TV show "Combat" used it. And if "Combat" was not a "QUINN-MARTIN PRODUCTION," well it should have been.)

At the park we ran up and down the side of a pine straw covered hill. Somehow in our imaginary battlefield, sliding down the hill on the pine straw made perfect sense.

And then hot dogs cooked over charcoal, and lots of cake and ice cream.

Perfect movie.

Perfect day.

Five stars for both.

The Dirty Dozen [HD DVD] Overview

A group of conscripted convicts, most already destined for death row, are drafted to go on a near-suicide mission with the understanding that if the Nazis don't kill them, the U.S. Army won't, either. In the hands of hardboiled director Robert Aldrich and a tough-as-leather cast headed by Lee Marvin (as a troublesome U.S. Army major), that's all the plot that's needed to make one rip-roaring World War II action flick. Marvin's mission is two-fold: first turn his dozen prisoners into a fighting unit and then turn them loose on a French chateau occupied by partying German officers. His crime-minded charges include John Cassavetes as a chronic malcontent, Telly Savalas as a ready-to-blow psycho, Donald Sutherland as a lame-brained lummox, and Charles Bronson and then-just-retired NFL superstar Jim Brown as a couple of clutch performers. The first half of the film allows the colorful cast of character actors to have their fun as they get their tails whipped into shape and develop shaky bonds with their commander. The second part is all action, as the culprit commandos wreck havoc and then run for their lives. Despite the fact that few of the "heroes" survive the bloodbath, the message here isn't that war is hell. Rather, it seems to be: war can be a hell of a good time... if you've got nothing to lose. --Steven Stolder

The Dirty Dozen [HD DVD] Specifications

Twelve jailbirds will earn their freedom...if they survive a suicide mission against the Nazi brass. Tough-as-nails Lee Marvin leads a nothing-to-lose convict squad of Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Trini Lopez, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Clint Walker and more in the all-time action trendsetter.

SuperSixties Classic, But... - Rob - Texas
The Dirty Dozen deserves all it's superlatives. It ran for weeks and weeks back when theaters had ONE screen. Lee Marvin was a big star before it, but this made him a SuperStar for years. Not having seen it for several years, I was impressed with Charles Bronson as he is virtually the second lead in the film. He had to turn down The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for this, so all was most definitely not lost. He even gets the last line! My other favorite actor in the movie is Clint Walker, which brings up a problem with the script, editing, or whatever. What happens to him??? I watched carefully this time in the climactic battle and there's still no death scene! His picture and name shows up at the end with the roll call of those KIA, but where's the body? An explanation is in order! So, I guess I'll have to fill in the blanks: Posey is wounded and assumed dead by the remaining Dirty Dozen who under duress of fire leave the Chateau and make it back to friendly lines. At the time of their convalescence, Posey is still listed as KIA. Unknown to them, the friendly French staff of destroyed chateau has found him and hidden him with the French Resistance. As the Allies advance through France, he eventually rejoins the Army and restored to his former rank. Oh yeah, he also later marries the beautiful French girl who nursed him back to health!

Brokeback Mountain [HD DVD] Review

BBM is a true masterpiece; I loved it. This widescreen 2-disc collector's edition is worth watching again & again. The bonus features are so good. This film effected me so much; I can't get it out of my mind. I always cry each time I see it. Love is universal - the story is so full of loss, mistakes, regrets, sadness, etc.- that it makes your heart break. The performances of Heath (sigh) as Ennis and Jake as Jack, along of course w/Ang Lee's masterful direction, are terrific. The screenplay by Mr. McMurtry and Ms. Ossana is perfect. The fact of Ennis & Jack not being together effects their entire lives, as well as the lives around them. All in all, what a great film!!

P.S.: That so-called "academy" robbed BBM of best picture of 2005; it is unbelievable that award went so undeservingly to something like "Trash"! The audible, unbelievable gasp of the audience must have been heard outside the theater! Wouldn't surprise me if it was just a cave in at the last minute. Stupid cowards. But, I admit that I never fail to be amazed and furious at all of that "academy's" continuous mistakes from way back. Heath was definitely robbed of best actor, as Jake was of best supporting actor,. The beautiful cinematography was not rewarded also. Some things never change...

Brokeback Mountain [HD DVD] Feature

Brokeback Mountain [HD DVD] Overview

A sad, melancholy ache pervades Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbors dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary.

Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made Brokeback an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's The Last Picture Show with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles The Ice Storm, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. Spare in style but rich with emotion, Brokeback Mountain earns its place as a classic modern love story. --Mark Englehart

Good Night, and Good Luck (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Review

Check Price Now!

Good Night, And Good Luck. looks at the early years of television and journalism principles; specifically the on-air clash in the 1950's between Edward R. Murrow of CBS and Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. With an outstanding cast, including McCarthy himself through archival footage, this film comes alive with intense emotion while depicting the historical See It Now shows and journalism integrity.

Sen. Joseph McCarthy abused his position of power when he claimed many U.S. citizens were Communist Party members. By instilling fear he was able to cripple people's lives with uncorroborated hearsay evidence. Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) decided to report the known facts of McCarthy's tactics on his show with the assistance of his right-hand man, Fred Friendly (George Clooney). With Murrow's strong following he was able change the course of history.

The film was produced in black and white and with impeccable acting and props I felt I was living through the events and they unfolded. Of course it must have been much more extraordinary back then; but, having not grown up in that time this is the closest I will ever come to understanding the impact of those events.

You do not need to be a history buff to enjoy this movie. A little light reading would not hurt though if you are not familiar with Murrow and McCarthy; I found it useful to have my computer at hand to lookup up some lesser known people I was curios about (but didn't need to know to have the film make sense).

David Strathairn did an excellent job portraying Murrow right down to the infamous Camel cigarette always in hand. The additional cast of George Clooney, Patricia Clarkson, Jeff Daniels, Robert Downey Jr., and Frank Langella all showed their talent on the screen. I was particularly impressed with Ray Wise who played Don Hollenbeck - his superb (although small) role with stay with me for a long time.

9 out of 10 - Rated PG - Watch this one for the historical importance and amazing film making.

Good Night, and Good Luck (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Feature

Good Night, and Good Luck (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Overview

Without force-feeding its timely message, Good Night, and Good Luck illuminates history to enlighten our present, when the need for a free and independent press is more important than ever. In 90 breathtaking minutes of efficient and intricate storytelling, writer-director George Clooney and cowriter Grant Heslov pay honorable tribute to the journalistic integrity of legendary CBS newscaster Edward R. Murrow, who confronted the virulent and overzealous anti-Communist witch-hunting of Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy in 1953-54, and emerged as a triumphant truth-seeker against the abuses of corporate and governmental power. As played by David Strathairn, Murrow is a dogged realist, keenly aware of the smear tactics that will be employed against him; Clooney provides crucial backup as Murrow's "See It Now" producer and closest confidante Fred Friendly, forming a fierce but not entirely fearless triumvirate of broadcasting bravery with CBS chief William Paley (Frank Langella), who anxiously champions Murrow's cause under constant threat of reprisals. While using crisp black-and-white cinematography (by Robert Elswit) to vividly recreate the electrifying atmosphere of the CBS newsroom and the early years of television, Clooney (son of long-time Cincinnati newsman Nick Clooney) proves his directorial skill by juggling big themes and an esteemed ensemble cast, never stooping to simplification of ethically complex material. Good Night, and Good Luck is an instant classic, destined for all the accolades it so richly deserves. --Jeff Shannon

Good Night, and Good Luck (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Specifications

"Good Night, And, Good Luck." takes place during the early days of broadcast journalism in 1950's America. It chronicles the real-life conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee. With a desire to report the facts and enlighten the public, Murrow, and his dedicated staff - headed by his producer Fred Friendly and Joe Wershba in the CBS newsroom - defy corporate and sponsorship pressures to examine the lies and scaremongering tactics perpetrated by McCarthy during his communist 'witch-hunts'. A very public feud develops when the Senator responds by accusing the anchor of being a communist. In this climate of fear and reprisal, the CBS crew carries on and their tenacity will prove historic and monumental.

Black and White Blu Ray - J. Wentworth - Hartford, CT USA
Good Night, and Good Luck. is a great movie and looks nice on blu ray. However, if you are looking for a film that will get the most out of your blu ray player then this probably isn't the best title to get. The picture is crisp and clear as one would come to expect from blu ray but the movie is in black and white. The blu ray has the same additional content that the DVD has so you're not missing out on anything. If you have an HDTV then the DVD will be upconverted and look as just as good as HD. If you own the DVD an upgrade is not neccessary.

I have the complete Ed Murrow collection, and I must say this portrays him and his fight with McCarthy very well, the good thing is it cut McCarthy,s venomous speech against Murrow to the nitty-gritty, making it more understandable, without the rambling that went on and on. I know I will watch it more than once.

Had not heard of this movie before and was delighted to have "discovered" it. Great entertainment.

King of California [HD DVD] Feature

King of California [HD DVD] Overview

Michael Douglas is such a great dramatic actor (not to mention villain) that it's worth remembering what a strong comedic performer he can be (War of the Roses, Romancing the Stone). In King of California, he digs into his offbeat lighter role with relish and vigor. Yet he softens the scene-chewing with appropriate poignancy, given that he's playing a mentally ill deadbeat who's essentially left his daughter to raise herself--and him. Douglas plays Charlie, a troubled yet good-humored musician who's just been released from institutional care. Evan Rachel Wood is his wise-beyond-her-years daughter, Miranda, who pays the bills, keeps house, and even buys a car as an unlicensed 15-year-old. The film examines the bond between troubled dad and grounded teen, and it's to both actors' credit that the slight (and slightly incredulous) plot doesn't diminish the impact of their love or anguish.

Charlie's convinced a buried Spanish treasure lies beneath the local Costco (one of many companies given costar billing; others include McDonald's, Petco, Target, and Chuck E. Cheese). The plot follows Charlie's single-minded, impossible-dream journey, while the world-weary Miranda is resigned to following ("Time to get on that old bipolar pony and ride," she mutters). But along the way, dad and daughter find true ways to reconnect, and therein lies the true majesty of King of California --A.T. Hurley

Armed with a metal detector and a stack of treasure-hunting books Charlie soon finds reason to believe that the gold resides underneath the local Costco and encourages Miranda to get a job there so that they can plan a way to excavate after hours.Initially skeptical Miranda soon finds herself joining in Charlie s questionable antics in an effort to give him one last shot at accomplishing his dreams in this darkly funny exciting and surprisingly hopeful take on the modern family and the American dream.Format: DVD HD Genre: COMEDY/ROMANTIC COMEDY UPC: 687797117717 Manufacturer No: FLP-11771

A Few Laughs... - Giordano Bruno - Wherever I am, I am.
... and an adroit portrayal of a nut-case California libertarian dysfunctional father with a heart (or possibly a whole chest) of gold. If you've ever lived in California, especially southern, you're excused; you don't need to see it, you can just sit on a step-ladder in your patio and watch your neighbors. Otherwise, you might not feel too bad about wasting an hour-and-a-half on a film that aspires to be as wildly sardonic as a Coen Brothers movie, but ends up as sappy as Gidget.

Oh yeah, the young woman, Evan Rachel, deserves another chance, in a stronger role. But please, don't cast her as a precocious seventeen-year-old again!

Awesome movie, decent picture. - Jeremy A. Hunter - New Hampshire
Movie is great, picture quality I'd give a 4, a few dark scenes with a good amount of grain.

Fantasy - Richard C. Idoux - APO, AE United States
Charlie Sheen certainly shows just exactly what the imagination can do to lead us on a merry chase after the impossible dream. The film brings out the true feelings that many viewers may have in reagrds to following the rainbow to find the pot of gold.

WWII in HD

WWII in HD Review

Check Price Now!

I never thought I'd see something that would challenge the 1974, 26-part BBC production "The World At War" The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition) as a documentary but this 10-part documentary does that and it's a high definition remake of thousands of hours of film, most in color and most never before broadcast to the public.

From the earliest days of the war -- the 1930s in both Europe and Asia -- to the liberation of Nazi concentration camps in Buchenwald, "World War II in HD" captures many of the most important battles and turning points of the war, all told in first person narrative from people that actually fought in war or covered it as war correspondents. This includes interviews with surviving veterans made in 2008-09 with people now more than 80 years of age.

Personally, this documentary struck a chord with me in one of the earlier hours on the battle of Tarawa, an archipelago of small islands in the Pacific that was a stepping stone to Japan and an important air base. My dad fought at Tarawa; he told me the four-day battle resulted in 6,000 deaths, 5,000 of which were Japanese. "We buried the Americans in graves and dug trenches for the Japs," dad told me.

The battle footage and narrative on Tarawa pretty much mimicked what dad told me only in much greater detail. It also mentions John Huston's 1944 documentary made on the American fight Marines At Tarawa (1945) that brought the war home to the public. "We wanted people to know we don't knock hell out of them every day," a voiceover says during the documentary about the battle and documentary that won the 1945 Oscar for short documentary.

And that's just one half-hour slice of this magnificent series. It tackles many of the important Pacific and European battles including Guadalcanal, Battle of the Bulge, Okinawa and the fight Americans had with the Japanese on American soil at Attu in Alaska's Aleutian islands. Every aspect of the war, from North Africa to bomber runs in Europe to nurses' roles in the Pacific, to the American depature and return to Bataan, the Tuksegee airmen, to FDR's death, the concentration camps, the Americans meeting the Russians in Berlin, and the atomic bombs in Japan, is covered in some detail with actual war footage you've probably never seen unless you saw it first on The History Channel.

The quality of the filmmaking, the restoration of the home movies to HD, and the scripting of individual voiceovers (sometimes by stars like Rob Lowe with a special plaudit to narrator Gary Sinise) from the real-life warriors is uniformly magnificent. Never does this film lag in one minute of its 10 hours. This is one of the most important World War II releases since "The World At War" and is is surely an instant classic of World War II storytelling. No fan of history should go without seeing this. Buy it for Christmas, either for yourself or for someone else.

WWII in HD Overview

The only people to see the war like this were the ones who lived it. Until now…

Seventy years in the making. Three thousand hours of color footage no one knew existed. The first documentary to show World War II from the perspective of both sides in full, immersive HD color, the world premiere HISTORY series WWII in HD uses the diaries of soldiers who fought in the war’s biggest battles to create a personal, introspective and detailed look at life on and off the front lines. Though it was illegal for U.S. soldiers to carry diaries, many hid them away in their packs and recorded their experiences in detail.

Now, through the use of these diaries and other source documents, as well as HD color and on-location shooting around the world, WWII in HD transforms their journey into a tangible piece of history. Culled from rare color archival footage from an exhaustive worldwide search and converted to HD with meticulous technique, WWII in HD provides a picture of World War II as it has never been seen before.

Why can't history classes be this interesting? - Keeva Cox - Dallas, TX USA
This entire series is masterfully done! Instead of a bunch of facts and figures delivered by the usual talking heads often seen in documentaries, this series focuses on 12 individuals that were on the front lines during the war. The battles of WWII are told in their own words, through their letters, reports, and interviews, making the entire documentary intensely personal. The narration provided by Gary Sinise seamlessly intertwines the personal accounts with the facts of the battles and strategies used, giving the viewer all of the background information they need to understand what's going on without being the least bit intrusive. The added backdrop of the never-before-seen color WWII footage of the events really makes it seem as if the viewer is right in the middle of the action; watching and experiencing everything for themselves. History teachers and textbook authors take note: this is how history should be taught!

Young people: You're scared of terrorists? Not after watching this... - David Vega - Arizona
This is the greatest documentary about the greatest story ever told. We think we are scared of terrorists....give me a break....terrorists are pimples on our posteriors compared to the fear the Nazis and Japs put the world through. Not only is this documentary visually breathtaking, but the meticulous research of each of the stories, the strategies of the war, and the perspective it gives the viewer is like nothing I've ever seen before. It truly proves that they were the greatest generation, the generation we should all strive to be. This documentary should be in every school...let the teacher close the book and pop this in as a history lesson because it can not be told better than this. I can't say enough about it. Jack Yusen was the best! "He went to go see his muddah on the back porch!"

This movie has always been one of my favorites, but the new blue-ray version really adds an extra "Wow" factor. The color and clarity are enhanced for added sharpness and enjoyment. We had recieved this dvd as a gift, so I wasn't as aware of the price until I checked it out here on Amazon.

Although, I really love the movie, I'm not sure that it is worth the extra money. Perhaps the economy has made me more budget conscious, but I would probably think twice about this unless you were absolutely determined to get THIS movie. In that case, you will not be disappointed. If you are trying to decide between Snow White and another movie at a lower cost, think hard.

The Blu-ray includes the movie in high-definition with 7.1 HD sound, DisneyView, an all-new music video, backstage featurettes, Disney Family Play, and classic bonus features.

Amazon.com Review

One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh

Lost City [HD DVD]

Lost City [HD DVD] Review

Many reviewers here seem to want to debate the historical, political or moral accuracy, truth or correctness of The Lost City.

Give it a rest, and appreciate this movie for what it really is.

Hey, revolution happens. It always has causes and effects.

The Lost City is art. High art at that.

It appears to me that Garcia did as good a job as humanly possible in balancing his persepctive from the pre-Revolutionary upper and upper middle class with those of the bureaucatic and military ruling class, the working classes, and the revolutionary forces. This was not a documentary. It would have been impossible to tell everyone's truth.

Garcia succeeded mightily in crafting a love letter to a place, a time, a history, a culture, and a future, that means much to many, and in doing so helping to illuminate and preserve that culture and awareness for us all.

Garcia's characters in the movie on the political right, center and left display the full spectrum of human conditions, motivations, and emotions, both good and evil, and frequently flawed.

Critics of the movie on either its political or artistic merits are revealing more about themselves, their own agendas, or their appreciation for something other than Hollywood action blockbusters, than about the shortcomings of Garcia or this film.

The Lost City is a story worth telling told well, a beautiful film, full of talented actors and performances, with lush visuals and music. The setting here is Havana, but it could have taken place anywhere, and this would have been a well made and moving film. It is therefore timeless and qualifies as classic art. No complaints. The End.

Lost City [HD DVD] Feature

Lost City [HD DVD] Overview

For his first feature film as a director, Andy Garcia has crafted an ambitious and vivid love story set amid the Cuban revolution. El Tropico, an elegant nightclub, overflows with exuberant music and sinuous dance; the owner, Fico (Garcia, Ocean's Eleven, The Untouchables), and his family live a life of privilege in Havana, but Fico and his father hope to steer the brutal reign of Batista towards democratic reforms. Fico's two brothers are not so patient and get caught up in the guerilla forces that seek to overthrow Batista by force; one dies after a failed coup attempt, the other joins Fidel Castro's revolutionary army. Meanwhile, Fico and his widowed sister-in-law Aurora (Ines Sastre) fall in love, their romance unfolding in the still-thriving Havana nightlife, while during the day Castro's new regime turns as repressive as Batista's. Gorgeous cinematography captures the spectacle of the musical numbers in El Tropico, which are never less than stunning, and the depiction of the political chaos is effective and dynamic. Unfortunately, at the heart of the movie is stasis; Fico, though morally indignant, never takes any action, and his courtship with Aurora is beautifully filmed but lacks palpable heat. Clumsy dialogue and odd digressions with mobster Meyer Lansky (Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man) and a seemingly metaphorical character known only as the Writer (Bill Murray, Lost in Translation) make a long movie feel even longer. But the music is undeniable; if your feet don't itch to dance after watching The Lost City, you have no soul. --Bret Fetzer

excellent - Xraytech - DC Area
This is a great movie, showing Cuba before the comunist came and how they changed this beautiful island country. As always, Andy Garcia was Great, he was perfect for the part. over all, it was well cast and a movie to see over and over again!!!!

Slick and beautiful to look at - but nothing of substance - Mr. Stephen Kennedy - Doha, Qatar
This vanity project of Andy Garcia obviously was borne out of the one thing that signally fails to come across on screen - passion. The story revolves around his character, a night club owner in 1958 Cuba. Through his eyes and through the relationships he has with both his family and the woman he loves, we see the events unfold of the revolution and its aftermath.
It's a potentially compelling story, and has been evoked with some stunning set design and memorably vivid recreation of pre-revolution Cuba, but ultimately this story of a family being torn apart by political and ideological differences just lacks momentum and, oddly - drama - to work. Garcia, who not only stars but co-wrote and directs, seems to want to be the new Godfather - its easy to spot the mannerisms and acting tics, but while he has the beginnings of the flab of a Brando, he lacks the intensity. There is an interesting subtext to the movie where we see him strive to remain an observer to events, as symbolised by his constantly picking up his Super 8 to capture events important to him - but ultimately he puts down the camera and the events involve him too deeply for him to remain an observer. Less interesting by far is the appearance of Bill Murray, who appears as The Comedian - a true observer, who comments wryly on proceedings while not being part of them. It's a device which alas does not add any depth to the narrative but merely drags it out in a way that takes one out of the story rather than illumining it.
Another problem with the movie is that for a film which purports to get under the skin of the revolution and its effects, it signally fails to show any reason for the discontent. We see a wealthy and happy family in a pristine Havana, and then a brother goes off to join the revolution - why he does is never really explored. The scenes of violence we do see rather symbolise what is wrong with the movie - we see grenades being thrown, gunshots, explosions - and when the smoke clears, the locations filled with marble and beautiful furnishings remain unscathed.
One factor which might raise the movie by a star to watchable for you, is if you are a fan of Cuban music - authentic and atmospheric music permeates the movie, and the movie seems more like a labor of love for the music, rather than the country, at times.
Being of Cuban descent, Garcia clearly had the energy to craft something special - it's just a shame that his energy failed to weave its way into the resulting film. What we ultimately have is a movie of loud gunshots and Cuban music in beautiful locations, alternated with mumbled conversations of seemingly great portent, which ultimately lead to - very little of interest.

Failure to Launch (Special Collector's Edition) [HD DVD] Feature

Failure to Launch (Special Collector's Edition) [HD DVD] Overview

The plot of Failure to Launch is utterly implausible, yet the movie is thoroughly fun. Tripp (laid-back Matthew McConaughey, Sahara, Dazed and Confused) is a 35-year-old man who still lives with his parents (Kathy Bates, Misery, and ex-quarterback Terry Bradshaw)--and they aren't happy about it. Eager to get him out of the nest, they hire Paula (Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker), a professional motivator who feigns relationships with boy-men so that their improved self-esteem will lead them to leave the nest. But Tripp's not the usual insecure shut-in Paula's used to, and as sparks fly, Paula finds herself losing her professional distance. This sort of set-up drove classic screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s; once you embrace the absurdity, the movie zips along with a surprising balance of humor and bittersweet shadings. Failure to Launch gets a huge boost from the supporting performance of Zooey Deschanel (Elf) as Paula's housemate Kit--part sourpuss, part tomboy, and entirely sexy and winning. McConaughey and Parker have enjoyable chemistry and carry the movie well, but Deschanel is an oddball romantic-heroine-in-waiting. Also featuring Bradley Cooper (Alias) and Justin Bartha (National Treasure). --Bret Fetzer

Paramount Failure to Launch - HD-DVD
Matthew McConaughey is Tripp, a 35-year-old who still lives with his parents. And who can blame him? It's free, he's gota great room, and mom (Kathy Bates) does the laundry. Desperate to get him out of the house, his parents hire a gorgeous woman, Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker), to give him a little...push. They just didn't expect Tripp would push back! Zooey Deschanel, Justin Bartha, Terry Bradshaw and Alias' BradleyCooper co-star in this romantic battle of wills that proves there's no place like home.

This film fails at just about everything... - Andrew Ellington - Mulholland Drive
If ever a films title should persuade you to walk in the other direction, `Failure to Launch' is truly telling. I am so tempted to give this an `F' and be done with it, but I find that there is at least one redeeming factor in this big pile of unrealistic, clichéd garbage; the stars. Yes, no matter how ridiculous and unintelligible and utterly preposterous this lazy mess of a film really is, each and every actor involved does all they can to make it watchable.

So, for you Zooey, Matthew, Kathy and Jessica; I give this horrible film a D.

The film revolves around Paula, a professional motivator who is hired by Al and Sue, parents of man-child Tripp. Tripp is approaching his middle-age years and he has yet to move out of the house; causing his parents to resort to Paula as a way to get him out the door. Of course, as you probably could have guessed, Paula falls in love with Tripp, Tripp finds out that she is scamming him and breaks things off, everyone's life falls apart and then they make up and things are happy again. The issue I have with the film isn't the formula, because it's become apparent that there really is no other formula available to screenwriters today. My issue is the reckless abandon with which the screenwriters chose to formulate the formula. It's just very mediocre, and when it tries to be original (there are far too many animals here) it winds up being so preposterous that it is almost insulting to the audience.

Thank God Almighty for the charm and comedic timing of Zooey Deschanel and Sarah Jessica Parker. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Matthew McConaughey does his usual schtick and looks `super hot' (according to my wife) and so bonus points for him or whatever, but really this movie is not about him. No, if it wasn't for Parker's undeniable charm and comedic chemistry or Deschanel's flawless timing and sensual draw this movie would have been a complete waste for me.

Kathy Bates is generally good in everything, so bonus points for that.

In the end though, I hate to say that I cannot recommend this movie to anyone. In fact, when anyone I know that has seen this finds out that I've seen it they roll their eyes and ask why I didn't turn it off before it started; it is that bad. There is nothing new, nothing remotely memorable and nothing that warrants repeated viewing at all. I love you Zooey, and you really worked your cute little buns off to make me enjoy every moment you were on screen; but even your quirky charm cannot save this disgrace from my trash bin.

Seeing her made me realize that I NEED to get to the movies and see `(500) Days of Summer' though!

Nothing Special - Jena Brazda - Rohnert Park, Ca
I don't think this movie really had much I mean it was just okay. There was nothing really special about it, I thought that it was going to be a romantic comedy and it really was either. I saw it and now that's it. Nothing to refer a friend or family member to.

Blah - D. Mikels - Skunk Holler
Imagine that: A rom-com starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. Why, knock me over with a feather! McConaughey gets to prance around with an open shirt, and Sarah gets to flutter those pretty peepers. And that about sums up FAILURE TO LAUNCH, a syrupy, sticky blech-fest (with some really bizarre, yet lame, animal attack scenes thrown in for good measure) that was plucked from two-stardom by some pretty solid performances by several supporters, including Zooey Deschanel, Justin Bartha, and Terry Bradshaw (who knows no decency).

A "consultant" hired by McConaughey's parents (Bradshaw and Kathy Bates) to trick (by feigning a relationship) their thirtysomething, fun-loving son Tripp to move out, Parker's character suddenly finds herself harboring romantic feelings. Wow, like we never saw that coming. And of course the metaphorical cat gets out of the bag, the ruse is exposed, Tripp gets ticked, and everyone else plots how to get these two stubborn lovebirds back together. Deschanel, playing Parker's quirky roommate, is so odd she's very, very good, and Bradshaw will stop at nothing to be the center of attention. His birthday suit scene has me starting therapy next week, yet at least made FAILURE TO LAUNCH immodestly entertaining.

Darkman [HD DVD] Overview

When attorney Julie Hastings (Frances McDormand) uncovers corrupt city real estate dealings, evil thugs attack her scientist boyfriend, Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson). Left for dead after his lab is detonated, he miraculously survives when the ensuing blast hurls him into the nearby harbor. Treated as a John Doe at a city hospital, he is unknowingly submitted to radical therapy which numbs his nerves to feeling--but which heightens his strength and his emotions. Once conscious, Peyton escapes from the hospital and builds a ramshackle lab in an abandoned industrial plant. Horribly burned and scarred by the lab explosion, he uses synthetic skin to impersonate his would-be murderers and seek retribution for their evil deeds. Peyton also tries to reunite with Julie, who believes him to be dead. While the film has an average script, it is overcome by the flashy cinematography of Bill Pope, the bombastic score by Danny Elfman, and the well-choreographed direction of Sam Raimi. The director confidently walks the line between suspense, action, comedy, and romance as he examines a bitter, victimized antihero who risks becoming as monstrous on the inside as he appears on the outside. --Bryan Reesman

The years have not been kind... - Marc Harris -
In the years since this movie came out.... one of the first gritty , dark comics... moviemakers have honed and sharpened the craft to such heights (The Dark Knight, Hellboy, X-men, Watchmen, etc, etc) that watching this now is the equivalent to watching a hokey, dated version of a 60's or 70's action hero...Moviemakers have thankfully figured out you don't have to use extreme campiness alone to convey a comic to the big screen. Among the flat out bad things about this movie, there is one absolutely MONUMENTALLY hokey, overwrought, overdone, gaudy, campy, tiring and exasperating element to this movie that is so bad, I nearly quit watching from fatigue! The soundtrack. I've probably seen about 500 or so movies and this is the worst music ever. period. hands down. There was an episode of the Family Guy where they spoof a Danny Elfman soundtrack versus the incredibly superior John Williams...I didn't quite get the joke , until I heard this caterwalling disaster of unbelievably irritating music, where nearly EVERY scene has this laughable melodramatic music that goes waaaay beyond shtick and straight to irritation land. Literally drags the movie down to B type shlock. The acting and premise of this movie are decent enough to deserve a do over but with a different producer and definitely someone other than Elfman doing the soundtrack.

Stylish B-Type Super Hero-Revenge Tale - Craig Connell - Lockport, NY USA
For a Class-B type movie and feel to it, it's pretty good....better than I anticipated. I've seen it twice and enjoyed it more the second time. I had forgotten how stylish-looking it was and it was fun to see.

What I did remember were a couple of wild scenes, such as "Darkman" (Liam Neeson) being swung around in the sky on the end of a chain from a helicopter, and the big fire scene early on which turns Neeson's character into the masked hero.

The villains in the movie are over-the-top, leading with Larry Drake's character "Durant." There also is some outrageous Rambo action which stretches way past credibility, such as people shooting from five feet away and missing our hero!

Overall, not as good as the critics would have you believe, but still entertaining. At least it has two quality actors in Neeson and Frances McDormand. Drake went on to play the infamous "Dr. Giggles." If you liked this crazy film, you'll love that one.

Eastern Promises (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD]

Eastern Promises (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Review

Check Price Now!

David Cronenberg's career has been one of the most unusual among prominent directors. After a decade of making highly novel and intellectual horror films Cronenberg flirted with the mainstream in "The Fly" and "Dead Ringers" before retreating into a bizarre third phase marked by adaptations of seemingly unfilmable material in the forms of "Naked Lunch" and "Crash." With "A History of Violence" Cronenberg opened the fourth phase of his career and took one more stab at a conventional narrative. Of course, "A History of Violence" is a far more unusual thriller than it may initially appear, and the same can be said of his follow up "Eastern Promises." Eastern Promises" is ultimately not as striking or as distinct as the aforementioned film, but it provides further evidence that the controlled, idea-oriented Cronenberg can (with assistance from screenwriter Knight) craft a more human drama, and can still place a distinct stamp on a convention-dominated genre.

"Eastern Promises" explores Russian-run organized crime in modern day London, opening when a young prostitute Tatiana (Sarah Jeanne Labrosse) dies during childbirth, and her nurse Anna (Naomi Watts), a second generation Anglo-Russian, discovers Tatiana's tragedy-filled diary. Anna takes it upon herself to place the child with the girl's relatives, and her investigations lead her to Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl), a seemingly helpful elderly Russian man who is soon revealed to be a powerful mobster with good reason to hide Tatiana's story. Simultaneously we glimpse into the core of the mafia while following the day-to-day lives of Kirill (Vincent Cassel), Semyon's haughty, self-absorbed son who constantly causes trouble and the cool, detached Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen), Kirill's friend and an up and coming "driver" within Semyon's organization. Nikolai soon notices Anna's investigations and, after first trying to warn her away, becomes personally involved, even at the risk to his place in the organization.

Though that synopsis suggests a crime/thriller film, "Eastern Promises" is substantially more staid than that, playing more as a straight drama set in the mafia's world. Though punctuated by moments of striking violence, the film is more obsessed with character and sorrowful mood, and Cronenberg cuts down on his an ace visuals to create a wintry London locale that is a flat, desolate place, wholly appropriate to the somber nature of the narrative. Moreover, "Eastern Promises" takes a more classically-styled approach to character than most recent mafia pics. While modern cinematic mobsters are typically mundane, bestial or neurotic, the brass of the Russian mafia here display a sort of self-regarding, aristocratic air even as they commit the basest crimes. The film's greatest strength is in the depth of the characters, most of whom initially appear to be standard types, but who grow to be more sophisticated as the film progresses. Particularly notable is Kirill, who is so tiresome and whiny at first, but who finally displays a surprising humanity, especially compared to his cold, business-like compatriots. (Cassel has long specialized in playing self-absorbed French punks, and he makes the transition to self-absorbed, Russian punk effortlessly.)

Watts and Mortensen make up the heart of the film. Though Watts's Anna is somewhat thinly written, she is the film's line to the real world, the shocked innocent who finds that a dark, unseen underworld surrounds us all. Conversely, Mortensen's mysterious Nikolai may seem to be nothing more than the mobster with a heart of gold, but his commanding presence dominates the film. Some are dissatisfied with his accent, but I fear that Russian accents are naturally goofy, and Mortensen's pure physical presence, with his dark glasses and slicked hair, generates cool aloofness. He is, however, a deeply sympathetic character who takes great personal risk for no personal benefit. In short, Nikolai displays the mix of detachment and self-control underlined by altruism/honor that marks so many classic heroes.

If "Eastern Promises" has a weakness, it is the thinness of the story. Even though Tatiana's story has wide-ranging impact on the mafia, by the film's end it still feels as if we've barely scratched the surface. The later acts are highly compelling, especially Nikolai's deservedly famous, audacious naked brawl in a public bathhouse, but the viewer can't help but feel that there is more to be uncovered. (Of course, this weakness is arguably a testament to the film's effect as well, as few movies seem to demand that they be longer and more elaborate, but the slight let down exists nevertheless.)

Still, that minor caveat aside, this is a distinctive, if not utterly unique, film and among Cronenberg's finest. He is known for his transformations, but I hope Cronenberg sticks with this approach for a little bit longer, as quality crime pics are in short supply, and he has the track record to bolster those standards quite a bit. Check it out.

Eastern Promises (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Overview

Universal Pictures Eastern Promises (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) David Cronenberg's signature obsessions flower in Eastern Promises, a stunning look at violence, responsibility, and skin. Near Christmastime in London, a baby is born to a teenage junkie--an event that leads a midwife (Naomi Watts) into the world of the Russian mob. Central to this world is an ambitious enforcer (Viggo Mortensen) who's lately buddied up with the reckless son (Vincent Cassel) ofa mob boss (Armin Mueller-Stahl, doing his benign-sinister thing). Screenwriter Steve Knight also wrote Dirty Pretty Things, and in some ways this isa companion piece to that film, though utterly different in style. The plot is classical to the point of being familiar, but Cronenberg doesn't allowanything to become sentimental; he and his peerless cinematographer Peter Suschitzky take a cool, controlled approach to this story. Because of that, when the movie erupts in its (relatively brief) violence, it's genuinely shocking. Cronenberg really puts the viewer through it, as though to shame the easy purveyors of pulp violence--nobody will cheer when the blood runs in this film. Still, Eastern Promises has a furtive humor, nicely conveyed in Viggo Mortensen's highly original performance. Covered in tattoos, his body a scroll depicting hispersonal history of violence, Mortensen conveys asubtle blend of resolve and lost-ness. He's a true, haunting mystery man.

Eastern Promises (Widescreen Edition) - Daniel Brauch - austin tx
if you liked a history of violence you will love this one. a little slow but it make up for it.its good stuff.

Vory v zakone - Gisli Jokull Gislason - Iceland
Vory v zakone - Thieves in law.

This movie left me very pleased, the script is very good, nothing is over explained but every thing connects. There is a constant threat of menace all through the movie and the portrait of the Russian mafia is dark and sinister, not the men to be trifled with, in fact stay away.

So it is no place for a warm hearted midwife looking for the origins of a new born baby. Her investigations take her face to face with the inner circle of the mafia, a place no one should go. Drugs, assassinations, human trafficking, prostitution - it is a dark world that shuns the light and attention.

With strong preformances by Naomi Watts, Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel it is the script that shines through. The directing is good and when there is violence it is no holds barred and all the time the potential for more is just below the surface.

It is a good and believable film. Highly recommended.

Cronenberg and Mortensen's best - G. YEO - Singapore
David Cronenberg has always been an edgy, disturbing director - and many of his films are difficult to watch. Eastern Promises is probably his most accessible film. There's something old world about this - no fancy turns - just plain old fashioned filmmaking and great acting. This is why the film succeeds. I can't praise the ensemble and script enough. This is definitely Viggo Mortensen's best role. He's a compelling actor. Vincent Cassel, who's always good, really finds his groove. As does Armin Mueller Stahl and of course Naomi Watts. The interplay and nuances of Eastern Promises makes it more Shakespearan and Godfather-like than a "thriller" as it's advertised. It's a thriller played out as a streetsmart chess game.

HD Moods: Trains [Blu-ray] Review

This is an extraordinarily great Blu-ray bargain for the price. This picture quality is very sharp, and I believe of Blu-ray reference quality. The cinematography is professionally done by a photographer who obviously loves his work. The quality lends itself to an almost 3-D feeling when watching the trains and scenery.

We see lots of steam trains including some on the Cumbres & Toltec and the Durango & Silverton in Colorado's San Juan mountains. There is also a section of breath-taking photography from the front of the engine (cab ride) on a spectacular mountain climbing railroad in Alaska and British Columbia.

Won't play. Replacement won't play either. - Jeffrey C. Wiseman - San Diego, CA United States
I have a brand new Blu-Ray player and I have a dozen Blu-Ray disks and they all work except this disk (HD Moods: Trains). I sent the first disk back and order a second (HD Moods: Trains), it won't play either.
Anyway be warned that this disk might not play.

OK - B. Maxwell - MN, USA
This is a poor use of disk space. The footage is often breathtaking, however it is often shot through the glass of the train window, with streeks/reflections visible between the camera and the view. Furthermore there was no attempt to edit the sound as would have been expected, thus the sound of the dispatcher can be heard when the camera was stationed in the engineer's position. Not recommended.

Great for train and scenery lovers - Stephen A. Williams -
This outstanding cross section of various types of surviving steam engines, as well as some off the beaten track railroads is just marvelous, one of the most picturesque, and entertaining that I have seen. High def video quality is excellent, and for the modest price, a real bargain, I hope to see more like this in the future.

Discovery Atlas: China Revealed [HD DVD]

Discovery Atlas: China Revealed [HD DVD] Review

Check Price Now!

The title of my review is one of the first lines of this film and it sets the tone for an exploration of contrasts and growths within a nation incomparable in the world. The "Discovery Atlas" series are celebrations of nations and cultures. As a celebration, the series is more hopeful than critical. The (brief) stories of each nation are interwoven with the individual people the documentary crew follows. Another documentary was produced recently by Discovery Times called China Rises - The Oldest Civilization on Earth, Reborn (4 Episodes on 2 DVDs), it is available on DVD now and is almost twice as long, but the production value is much lower (an example would be the difference in soundtracks: This Atlas edition of China has a soaring, busy, and at times, ancient, musical score while the "China Rises" documentary pales in comparison).

What follows in this review are statistics and quotations taken directly from the film (I wrote them down while watching and pausing the video).....

It is now predicted that the Chinese economy will be the largest in the world in little more than 20 years. China has 1/5 of the world's population and now consumes almost 1/3 of the world's steel and almost 1/2 of its concrete. In any single minute the Chinese nation now burns almost 2,500 thousands pounds of coal, 24,000,000 watts of electricity and 200,010 gallons of crude oil. It has been estimated that in 30 years we will need another planet earth to satisfy China's ever growing appetite for raw materials. But for all this explosion of industry, China still rests on traditions that are thousands of years old, like the patty fields on terraces in Long Shen. One terrace worker said, "We get up at 6...we don't come back home until 8 or 8:30." These terraces are known as the "Dragon's Back." For all of its vast area, less than 10% of China can be farmed. One worker remembers the terrible famine of 1959. Until 1978, the Communist Party directly controlled all of China's land, but then the announced an extraordinary change in policy: hand the land over to the peasants to run themselves. The average peasant income rocketed by more than 15,000 %.
The Communist Party has announced to businesses in the city, "To get rich is glorious." 10s of millions have abandoned farming life for city dwelling. Already 8-times the size of New York City, Shanghi is expanding every day: investors are pouring more than 10,000,000 dollars a year into the city.
China covers over 3½ million miles of land and there are over 50 different peoples. The people of Inner Mongolia still hold on to their traditions. China is a nation so diverse, its people speak 7 different languages and over 80 dialects. There is just one bond between them all: the Chinese calligraphy. Kung Fu (Wushu) is a Chinese contribution to the Martial Arts.
The most populace nation on earth, China has 1.3 billion people nearly double the population of all of Europe and America combined. Every minute another 34 Chinese children are born, every year the population grows another 7 years. In 1979 they instituted a one-child-policy; this policy has recently been relaxed but nothing without an entire generation of only-child families.
In one of Beijing's largest restaurants, 100 chefs cook the evening meal.
In 1966, Mao stood on the balcony of the Forbidden City and declared the Cultural Revolution. Beijing's bow makers were a target of Mao's desire to destroy many of the traditions of China. After 2 decades, the bow makers are back at their craft.
The Great Wall of China is a testament to the power of old China. 600 years ago the Ming Dynasty decided to close off the northern boarder of China: 4,000 miles. A million laborers were put to work; they build a wall wide enough for 5 horses to ride alongside each other on the wall. With 1,000 garrison towers over 100,000 troops. Now, China is building again with similar ambitions. There are more construction projects going on in China then in anywhere else in the world. There is a new middle class in China. 12 million new faces join China's job market every year. Drugs are problem for modern China, heroine especially. There are over 750,000 Chinese on enforced government detox programs. Overall, it is estimated that there are between 7 and 10 million addicts: a 10 fold increase in just 5 years. One taxi driver is shown on the documentary to be in possession of drugs, he was smuggling them across a boarder; he later faced the death penalty for drug smuggling.

Poor HiDef Imagery of Gorgeous Locations - D. Klein - Los Angeles, CA
Most other reviews are for the standard-definition DVD version. And for regular DVD, "China Revealed" probably looks great. BUT NOT ON BLU-RAY. For a Blu-ray disc, this "hi-definition" tour of China has some of the worst video quality I've seen for a released BD. It may have been okay for their "broadcast" where signals get highly compressed any way, but an actual Blu-ray disc can allow for a much better signal. The blockiness and poor video compression of this BD often makes people's faces look like they were built out of legos and the details of the supposedly amazing vistas look like they've been smudged, crushed or created with construction paper cut-outs. I was so looking forward to a beautiful tour of China; and although the subject matter is often amazing, it is only a mild exaggeration to say that you can download better picture quality off of YouTube. Many PlayStation Network downloads do look better. It was disappointing to see the marvelous colors of such a rich country so poorly compressed. See the documentary, learn its lessons about China, but don't waste your money on the Blu-ray version. Buy it in standard-def (which probably was the original source). A travelogue or Blu-ray title that should be LIVING on its video quality should LOOK much, much better than this. And I would expect better from a name like "Discovery HD". These images are blotchy, blocky and jagged.

An Entertaining Documentary, But Don't Be Mislead. - Alyse Marie - Shanghai, China
I couldn't tell you how excited I was to buy this DVD. I pre-ordered it for myself two months in advance off of Amazon. It came just in time for my mother to buy it from me and rewrap it as a Christmas gift.

At first I was amazed, the documentary really gets you excited about the region. The colorful stories of the different Chinese citizens kept me on the edge of my seat. There were the farmers in southern china, who have grown rice for centuries on the edge of mountains (known as ti tian). There was a poor window washer who migrated to Shanghai to earn 10 times more money in the city, than in his hometown in the country. An Olympic hopeful, a young gymnast shows us her home away from home where in her early teens (I think she was 11 or 12), she was preparing with 8 hour a day - 6 day a week practices. You meet a millionaire entrepreneur who has been building Shanghai into an international city, from skyscrapers to fine dining. Then you head north where Buddhist monks and young men mastering the art of wushu (Chinese martial arts) live together, isolated from the rest of China.

All these things capture the imagination and you become fully aware of the impact China is beginning to make on the world. As well as the many things we can learn from one of the oldest surviving cultures in history. The movie left me wanting more, which is where it left me, and the reason why I knocked off a star.

Some tags that I have seen in reference to this DVD on Amazon such as communism, exploitation, oppression, government, and Mao (referring to Mao Zedong) are a little misleading. This documentary touches upon the issue of a new China, with new dreams, and its fast pace to becoming apart of the developed world. It briefly, if at all, touches of the tags above. If you are looking for a politically motivated documentary with sustainable information on Chinas politics, international affairs, history, and even economy, you will not find it here. This is a piece focusing on certain people and the lives they lead as they ride the fast wave that is China's development in the present and near future.

I enjoyed it greatly, and I believe it was worth the money. I myself enjoy personal stories and plights, but if you are looking for more facts and information on China, this may not be the documentary for you.

Life Behind the Great Wall - Loyd E. Eskildson - Phoenix, AZ.
"China Revealed" follows several individual Chinese as the oldest continuous civilization on earth transitions into a leadership position. Its 1.3 billion people are expected to become the next superpower, and the world's largest economy within twenty years. All despite being comprised by over 50 different peoples and 7 major languages, fortunately united by the common ability to read and write Chinese.

Viewers begin by seeing incredibly terraced 8 century-old rice fields in a mountainous region, and learn that less than 10% of China is arable (large desert and mountain areas). The "good news" is that peasant income has increased 1,500% since they were given control of their lands in 1978.

Urban residents, however, have fared even better. Shanghai is 8X the size of NYC, with 20 million inhabitants, vs. NYC's 8 million. One new immigrant from the rural areas is followed as he works long hours cleaning skyscraper windows and saves his money for his family back home.

"China Revealed" also follows a 12-year-old girl selected for training in gymnastics beginning at age two, a young female computer worker who undertakes cosmetic surgery to improve her chances of promotion, Inner Mongolians following traditional ways while worrying about change, and a rural female police chief who has risen above traditional Chinese sexism.

Overall, "China Revealed" is an impressive depiction of an impressive people moving forward.
