March of the Penguins [HD DVD]

March of the Penguins [HD DVD] Review

I chose to see "March of the Penguins" as a diversion to a 100+ degree day, and saw that cold weather is worse than hot weather. Now, in the brisk part of autumn, it still holds up.

Penguins from several areas of Antarctica converge on land, safe from predators and the ebbing ice shelf. They are there to mate, birth, and care for their chick.

Monogamous for that year, penguins pair up and the mother lays an egg.

The mother dashes off back to the sea, which, thanks to the winter and new ice, is as far as 70 miles. She's starving, having lost one-third of her weight in laying the egg. The trip is long, and she's not fast. Hungry seals await them, some penguins lose their way, and some are too exhausted to continue.

Well-fed, full of food for her chick, she returns, and the father makes the same trip so he can eat. The father stayed behind to incubate the egg, and protect the new chick. He has lost one half of his weight.

The pair trade places a few more times as winter plods on. With temperatures 80 below zero, and winds up to 125, I felt cold just watching. The penguins huddle to keep warm, rotating which must do outside duty.

Morgan Freeman narrates. His voice does not overcome the story. Better written than any documentary I have ever seen, Freeman respects the script. Having never seen a documentary in a theater before, I was impressed at how well it worked on the big screen.

There is no plot, even though there is a beginning and an end. Unlike many documentaries, it does not detail the intricacies of eating, mate choosing, or science of penguin living. It is more about watching the arduous life cycle, with some explaining what we are watching.

The camera works captures the cold -- the shivering penguins, the snow blowing like dust over the long line of marching penguins. It reminded me of movies about Siberia, showing Soviets living in a frozen, cold natural prison.

This isn't a cute animal movie. Tender children might be saddened to see the eggs and chicks freezing, and could be quite frightened when the vicious seals overtake swimming penguins.

I fully recommend "March of the Penguins."

March of the Penguins [HD DVD] Feature

March of the Penguins [HD DVD] Overview

March of the Penguins instantly qualifies as a wildlife classic, taking its place among other extraordinary films like Microcosmos and Winged Migration. French filmmaker Luc Jacquet and his devoted crew endured a full year of extreme conditions in Antarctica to capture the life cycle of Emperor penguins on film, and their diligence is evident in every striking frame of this 80-minute documentary. Narrated in soothing tones by Morgan Freeman, the film focuses on a colony of hundreds of Emperors as they return, in a single-file march of 70 miles or more, to their frozen breeding ground, far inland from the oceans where they thrive. At times dramatic, suspenseful, mischievous and just plain funny, the film conveys the intensity of the penguins' breeding cycle, and their treacherous task of protecting eggs and hatchlings in temperatures as low as 128 degrees below zero. There is some brief mating-ritual violence and sad moments of loss, but March of the Penguins remains family-friendly throughout, and kids especially will enjoy the Antarctic blue-ice vistas and the playful, waddling appeal of the penguins, who can be slapstick clumsy or magnificently graceful, depending on the circumstances. A marvel of wildlife cinematography, this unique film offers a front-row seat to these amazing creatures, balancing just enough scientific information with the entertaining visuals. --Jeff Shannon

Scary Movie 4 (Unrated & Uncensored) [HD DVD]

Scary Movie 4 (Unrated & Uncensored) [HD DVD] Review

There were some gags that didn't hit home but nothing to drag the whole movie down. This is the most visually interesting and ambitious one and as far as I'm concerned the 4th time was the charm. IN this case the gratuitous bits, like the Oprah interview at the end, actually worked great and showed a growing confidence in the material, although I wouldn't mind if they stopped while they were ahead (which, of course, they didn't).

Scary Movie 4 (Unrated & Uncensored) [HD DVD] Specifications

Some comedy is like a scalpel; the Scary Movie series is a hand grenade, spewing bodily fluids and big-breasted women in all directions as they lampoon the latest horror. In Scary Movie 4's case, the main targets are War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw, and Tom Cruise jumping all over Oprah's couch (the scariest of the lot). Along the way, potshots get taken at non-horror fare like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby, as well as obvious targets like Michael Jackson and George W. Bush, among others. Anna Faris (Lost in Translation) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners) return as the central characters wandering through a crazy quilt of horror scenarios, joined by Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) doing a dead-on parody of Cruise at his most manic. Cameos include everyone from Charlie Sheen to Shaquille O'Neal to Carmen Electra. Some of it's funny, some of it's not, but there's a generally buoyant zaniness that comes from director David Zucker, one of the creators of Airplane!, which started the whole firehose-of-jokes aesthetic. --Bret Fetzer

The Bourne Identity [HD DVD]

The Bourne Identity [HD DVD] Review

This is an action thriller that is great from start to finish.

A man is rescued at sea. He has no memory of who he is or anything about him. He ends up being in some very tight spots and demonstrates that he has a wide variety of impressive fighting skills.

In his quest to figure out who he is, he connects with a young German woman, Marie (Franka Potente) who assists him throughout much of the show. As it goes along, he (Matt Damon) discovers that his name, or one of them, is Jason Bourne. It turns out that he is a CIA assassin. While he has amnesia, his employers think that he has gone rogue and are attempting to kill him.

All of this makes for a story with lots of action. The events take place all across Europe. It is really a very entertaining film that is a good one for any fan of action flicks.

Now this top operative is the government's number one target in this super-charged, thrill-a-minute spectacular loaded with "Non-stop action!" (Bill Zwecker, FOX-TV).

The Bourne Identity [HD DVD] Specifications

Freely adapted from Robert Ludlum's 1980 bestseller, The Bourne Identity starts fast and never slows down. The twisting plot revs up in Zurich, where amnesiac CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), with no memory of his name, profession, or recent activities, recruits a penniless German traveler (Run Lola Run's Franka Potente) to assist in solving the puzzle of his missing identity. While his CIA superior (Chris Cooper) dispatches assassins to kill Bourne and thus cover up his failed mission, Bourne exercises his lethal training to leave a trail of bodies from Switzerland to Paris. Director Doug Liman (Go) infuses Ludlum's intricate plotting with a maverick's eye for character detail, matching breathtaking action with the humorous, thrill-seeking chemistry of Damon and Potente. Previously made as a 1988 TV movie starring Richard Chamberlain, The Bourne Identity benefits from the sharp talent of rising stars, offering intelligent, crowd-pleasing excitement from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

The Last Samurai [HD DVD]

The Last Samurai [HD DVD] Review

The Last Samurai is an outstanding film that tells the fictional story of Captain Nathan Algren (Cruise), a soldier haunted by regrets hired to train raw Japanese recruits to fight the Samurai, and Samurai leader Katsumoto (Watanabe), who is leading a rebellion in Japan against those who he believes are westernizing the country too quickly. Algren ends up becoming a prisoner of the Samurai, but after spending a number of months as their captive, subsequently finds peace in their way of life. Eventually, he joins forces with the men he was hired to fight against.

Not only is the plot interesting and original, but the performances of the actors are nothing short of amazing. Tom Cruise puts forth an outstanding effort, which I consider his best ever. Ken Watanabe is perfect as Katsumoto, commanding even more attention than Cruise, and all of the secondary characters are equally convincing in their roles. Some of the highlights include Koyuki as Taka, Hiroyuki Sanada as Ujio, and Timothy Spall as Simon Graham.

The execution of the battle scenes was excellent. This can be attributed to a cast full of professional sword-fighters as extras and Cruise and Watanabe doing all their own stunts. As seen in the extras, the progression of Cruise's skills with a sword isn't staged, either. Sanada and others spent hours working with him every day until he could handle a blade with precision.

Having seen this film a dozen times, I can also say I honestly am not able to find many mistakes in the filming and editing, either. The ones I have noticed are hidden well, and none of them take away from the film in any way. There are a few lines in the script that come across as slightly bland or predictable, but overall the script is very well written. Tom Cruise actually speaks Japanese in a handful of scenes, and he does it well.

What really makes the movie, on top of everything else, is the beautiful score composed by Hans Zimmer. Though he often recycles his scores and changes them very little, this one is unique and powerful.

The Last Samurai's historical accuracy isn't as poor as some reviewers would suggest, but it is a work of fiction. On the special edition of this DVD, 2 deleted scenes are included, along with "the filming of" one of the scenes, and "the filming of" the Cruise beheading scene. There is also a handful of interviews and a look at the real history of the decline of the Samurai in Japan.

All in all, The Last Samurai is an extremely entertaining and convincing film. The special edition of this DVD is well worth the extra few dollars, and it has become one of my all time favorite movies.

The Last Samurai [HD DVD] Feature

The Last Samurai [HD DVD] Overview

While Japan undergoes tumultuous transition to a more Westernized society in 1876-77, The Last Samurai gives epic sweep to an intimate story of cultures at a crossroads. In America, tormented Civil War veteran Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is coerced by a mercenary officer (Tony Goldwyn) to train the Japanese Emperor's troops in the use of modern weaponry. Opposing this "progress" is a rebellion of samurai warriors, holding fast to their traditions of honor despite strategic disadvantage. As a captive of the samurai leader (Ken Watanabe), Algren learns, appreciates, and adopts the samurai code, switching sides for a climactic battle that will put everyone's honor to the ultimate test. All of which makes director Edward Zwick's noble epic eminently worthwhile, even if its Hollywood trappings (including an all-too-conventional ending) prevent it from being the masterpiece that Zwick and screenwriter John Logan clearly wanted it to be. Instead, The Last Samurai is an elegant mainstream adventure, impressive in all aspects of its production. It may not engage the emotions as effectively as Logan's script for Gladiator, but like Cruise's character, it finds its own quality of honor. --Jeff Shannon

Emperor of the Seas (Discovery HD Theater)

Emperor of the Seas (Discovery HD Theater) Review

From a Western perspective, it's easy to look at castrated males as inferior or less than. However, this work gives an example of how China differed. This focuses on Zheng-He, a eunuch who was like an Eastern Christopher Columbus.
It's also easy to assume that various people of color did not have contact with people of different regions until Europeans colonized their lands. This work shows East Asians enteracting with South Asians, Arabs, and Africans. If you support person-of-color unity, you'll like seeing this. Islam played an important role in different peoples feeling that they had something in common. People of that faith may really enjoy this work too.
Foucault said power is never absolute. So though Zheng He was instructed to get other rulers to pay tribute to the Chinese emperor, he also had to have additional ships to ward off pirates.
The graphics in this documentary are excellent. The reenactments by actors are done well too. You can see dancers dressed just like the ones in "House of Flying Daggers" here. I liked this work so much better than "Did They Come Before Columbus?"

Fletch [HD DVD]

Fletch [HD DVD] Review

Come on, just release the DVD and save the silly "Edition" names. The worst offender must surely be the upcoming "Those Aren't Pillows Edition" of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. yikes.

Still, I can't *not* give this classic 5 stars. Who doesn't know (and repeat!) lines from the movie. Chevy at his best: allowed to ad-lib at will.

Fletch [HD DVD] Feature

Fletch [HD DVD] Overview

Gregory McDonald's lightweight mystery novel about an undercover newspaper reporter cracking a police drug ring is transformed by screenwriter Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, and writer/director of The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas) into a fairly sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle. Enjoyment of the film pivots on whether you find Chase's flippant, smart-ass brand of verbal humor funny, or merely egocentric. If you don't like Chase, there's really no one else worth watching (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play I.M. "Fletch" Fletcher, a disillusioned investigative reporter whose cynicism and detached view on life mirrors the actor's understated approach to comedy. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to adopt numerous personas, as his job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of film's humor centers on the ridiculous idea that any of these phony accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone. These not-so-clever disguises are put to use when Fletch becomes involved in the film's smart but continually self-mocking two-part mystery. As well as trying to gather drug-smuggling evidence against the LAPD for a long-overdue newspaper story, a rich and apparently terminally ill stranger also offers Fletch a large payoff to kill him. While the film does a fairly good job juggling both of these plots, not to mention tossing in a love interest as well, it's subservient, for better or worse, to Chase's memorable one-liners and disguises. Followed by two forgettable sequels that lack both the original's wit and Chase's attention span. --Dave McCoy

Fletch [HD DVD] Specifications

Chevy Chase is at his hilarious best as Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, a newspaper reporter who changes his identity more often than his underwear. While working on a drug expose, he stumbles onto a scam that gets him up to his byline in murder, police corruption and forbidden romance. For this ace newsman, it'll be the story of the year, if he can only stay alive till the deadline. Fletch is a must-own comedy-thriller classic. Just don't call him "Irwin"!

Sea of Love [HD DVD]

Sea of Love [HD DVD] Review

As a cop this actor is pathetic but fascinating. A serial killer is at work in New York, using poetic ads in the Village Voice to attract his preys. But in fact he is not the killer really but the real prey of the killer who is... the woman, at first they thought, the police, and they are wrong of course. So our cops dress up as bar waiters and poetic lovers and they start dating women in a bar via some nice poems in the Village Voice. Of course in the lot they manage to catch the good one, but in the meantime our cop has fallen in love with her and he is unable to see straight. He is so shocked when he discovers she is connected with the victims that he stops thinking and he wants her to commit one more crime and he frightens her to death and she leaves. It is then someone rings at the door and what a surprise, a colleague of his, a cop, ... you go and discover the details. Sordid, bleak, miserable, and that sea of love is just spilled over, a real tsunami. The actor is so good that he makes us believe two things. For one cops have special eyes and anyone can recognize them by the way they look at you or anything. And for two that a cop in love is like a whale out of the sea, dying because he is crushed by his own weight, that of his gun and badge, and crushing everything around himself like the big fat monster he is. One of these actors of the old generation who were, and some of them still are and have taught the trade to a few younger ones, able to impersonate any part, any role, any situation as if they were chameleons. That's rare, my gosh, that's rare but so good when you meet one from time to time. That thriller is "The Experts" plus a good touch of humane and human depth. Let's hope competition and the crisis helps Hollywood to ask their actors to relearn that trade of old and begin again composing their characters from inside and not as if they were some kind of costumes you don over your evening jacket or dress.

Sea of Love [HD DVD] Overview

After a career slump that plagued him through most of the 1980s, Al Pacino made a stellar comeback in this taut 1989 thriller, playing a weary New York police detective who falls in love with the woman (Ellen Barkin) who is the prime suspect in the murder case he's investigating. Expertly written by Richard Price and directed by Harold Becker, the story is designed to keep its central characters (and the viewer) in a state of constant suspicion and arousal--an emotional combination that sends dangerous sparks flying between Pacino and Barkin. Their chemistry is intense, and their love scenes are some of the hottest of any movie of its decade. But Sea of Love is not merely concerned with cheap titillation. It's a riveting whodunit with scenes of nail-biting suspense and memorable dialogue that make it as interesting to listen to as it is to watch. Barkin had made a similarly sexy impression in The Big Easy, and here she gives one of the best performances of her underrated career, matching Pacino's excellence scene for scene. The ending's a bit of a letdown because the murder solution comes somewhat out of the blue, but it's the acting and suspense that you'll remember most--qualities that make Sea of Love one of the best films of its kind. --Jeff Shannon

Scooby-Doo - The Movie [HD DVD]

Scooby-Doo - The Movie [HD DVD] Review

This movie totally rocks! I've always loved Scooby-Doo since i was a kid (I'm 21 now) and I remembered watching the original Scooby-Doo Where Are You episodes, The Scooby-Doo movies, The Scooby and Scrappy-Doo show, A Pup Named Scooby Doo (which I absolutely loved!) and the recent animated movies. Oh, plus What's New Scooby Doo! I remember, when I first heard of the release of this movie in 2002, I was really excited! One of everyone's favorite cartoon been brought to life! I was even more excited to hear that Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. would be the leads in the movie as Daphne and Fred. Their previous movies were mostly really cool, and neither of them are bad on the eye (they're both GORGEOUS!). When I saw the movie, I was blown away! This movie was PERFECT! Really fun and funny, action-packed, filled with jokes and also pretty scary. That was even more than I really expected. WAY MORE!

The CGI Scooby was top-notch (making him look like a real dog, making him cartoony and funny at the same time and leaving him intact as the actual cartoon must've been really hard, BUT THEY PULLED IT OFF 100%

The characters, Shaggy, Daphne, Fred and Velma, played by Matthew Lillard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Linda Cardellini were dead-on their cartoon counterparts. To me, this cast was perfect, they really felt like a group of friends (well, Sarah and Freddie were engaged during this [and they have such chemistry!] and Matthew had appeared with Freddie in other flicks and are really good friends). I think this cast actually made me like the characters even more. Matthew Lillard IS Shaggy, no questions. Linda Cardellini IS Velma (and she even made her quite sexy) Freddie Prinze Jr. IS SO Fred (quite funny performance by the way). But Sarah Michelle Gellar completely blowed me away! She made Daphne so much better than the actual cartoon character. That ain't an easy feat. I liked how she gave Daphne that edge and spunk, while still looking completely stunning in 6'' inch high pink go-go boots.

Everything in this movie was REALLY WELL MADE. The CGI effects, the sets (HUGE and IMPRESSIVE), the costumes (I LOVE how they made Mystery Inc. look, they seemed cooler, more modern, but still retaining their cartoonish charm...

I really can't say enough of this movie! I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT! I saw it in theaters, bought it on VHS, then DVD, seen it like 5+ times and still love it! I can't wait to own it on Blu-Ray and see how it looks!

This movie has everything= Cartoon mega-hit brought to life even better than the original, FUNNY, WITTY, COLORFUL, ACTION-PACKED, GREAT CHARACTERS and PERSONALIZATION, HORROR and so MUCH MORE!! That's SCOOBY DOO! Gotta love it!

Scooby-Doo - The Movie [HD DVD] Feature

Scooby-Doo - The Movie [HD DVD] Overview

"I would've gotten away with it if weren't for you meddling kids!" Equal parts remake and spoof, this tongue-in-cheek live-action resurrection finds the old Saturday-morning-cartoon gang reunited to investigate the zombie teens of a haunted amusement park. Frantic action and big-screen special effects stand in for logic, but for a while it makes for a spirited send-up. Freddie Prinze Jr., under a blond hairdo and an ascot, turns Fred into a preening pretty boy, and Sarah Michelle Gellar plays with her own Buffy image as eternal damsel-in-distress Daphne (in magenta mini-dress and maxi-boots, no less), but this show belongs to gangly Matthew Lillard, who is the adenoidal beatnik Shaggy. His loyal-to-the-end friendship with the computer-animated Scooby-Doo is the most convincing relationship in the whole two-dimensional goof. Some of the supernatural nasties may be scary for young kids and the humor careens from winking self-awareness to Scooby doo-doo gags, but otherwise this is as harmless as a Saturday-morning chapter and as substantial as a Scooby snack. --Sean Axmaker

Zoinks! Two years after a clash of egos forced Mystery Inc. to close it's doors, Scooby-Doo and his clever crime-solving cohorts Fred (FREDDIE PRINZE JR.), Daphne (SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR), Shaggy (MATTHEW LILLARD) and Velma (LINDA CARDELLINI) are individually summoned to Spooky Island to investigate a series of paranormal incidents at the ultra-hip Spring Break hot spot. Concerned that his frightfully popular resort might truly be haunted, Spooky Island owner Emile Mondavarious (ROWAN ATKINSON) tries to reunite those notoriously meddling detectives to solve the mystery before his supernatural secret scares away the college crowds. Scooby and the gang will have to overcome their personal differences and forget everything they think they know about fake ghouls and phony creatures to crack the case, save themselves and possibly...the world! Dragonheart [HD DVD] Review

Okay folks, I am guessing you have seen this movie as it is quite a few years old now so I will not bother going into the details of it. If you wish to know more about the plot then check it out on imdb.

The big question is, how did it fare being transfered to HD-DVD? Well to sum it up I would say brilliantly. The video transfer is crisp and detailed, it does suffer a tad with film artifacts but this is the best we are ever going to see it that is for sure.

The audio transfer is absolutely superb.

You want HD-DVD? Well this is as good as it gets for this title.

Dragonheart [HD DVD] Feature

Dragonheart [HD DVD] Overview

Universal DragonHeart - HD-DVD
In medieval England, Bowen, a gallant dragonslayer, comes upon Draco, the last dragon on Earth (who can talk). In a scheme that keeps Draco alive and earns money for Bowen, thedragon terrorizes a town, and Bowen "kills" him to earn a reward. In the process, the two become close friends. But when King Einon, the evil ruler of the land, goes one step too far, Bowen and Draco-- both of whom have been betrayed by the despot in the past -- set out to defeat him. However, years ago the noble Draco gave half his heart to Einon in order to save the ruler's life. Therefore, ifEinon dies, so does Draco. Can Bowen find a way to kill Einon without losing his beloved, fire-breathing partner?

Dragonheart [HD DVD] Specifications

In the closing paragraph of his 1996 review of Dragonheart, noted critic Roger Ebert summed up this adventurous fantasy quite nicely: "While no reasonable person over the age of 12 would presumably be able to take it seriously, there is nevertheless a lighthearted joy to it, a cheerfulness, an insouciance, that recalls the days when movies were content to be fun." That's precisely the quality that makes Dragonheart so appealing, despite the fact that it didn't exactly take flight and breathe fire at the box office. The movie takes itself seriously without sacrificing the wit and cleverness that make it so entertaining. It's about the last of the great dragon slayers, Bowen (Dennis Quaid), who teams up with the last of the great dragons, Draco (and voiced by Sean Connery), after they realize that killing each other would put them both out of business! So they devise a bogus dragon-slaying act that's a huge hit as they tour from village to village. Later, they must rouse the peasantry against the loutish Prince Einon (David Thewlis), whose life was once saved by Draco, but who now violates the "Old Code" of honor with a ruthless reign of terror. As Ebert rightly noted, Dragonheart is no masterpiece, and its story (which was originally conceived as a darker, more serious drama) isn't likely to capture everyone's heart (dragon or otherwise). But it's full of exciting action, witty dialogue, and gallant heroism, and in the presentation of a realistic talking dragon it's a milestone in computer-generated special effects, far surpassing the breakthroughs of Jurassic Park three years earlier. --Jeff Shannon.

King Kong [HD DVD]

King Kong [HD DVD] Review

There have been a lot of attempts to remake the movie King Kong since the original came out in 1933 and this was by far the best one ever made. It is a bit long, but it is a great film. I would definitely suggest seeing this film.

King Kong [HD DVD] Feature

King Kong [HD DVD] Overview

Movies don't come any bigger than Peter Jackson's King Kong, a three-hour remake of the 1933 classic that marries breathtaking visual prowess with a surprising emotional depth. Expanding on the original story of the blonde beauty and the beast who falls for her, Jackson creates a movie spectacle that matches his Lord of the Rings films and even at times evokes their fantasy world while celebrating the glory of '30s Hollywood. Naomi Watts stars as Ann Darrow, a vaudeville actress down on her luck in Depression-era New York until manic filmmaker Carl Denham (a game but miscast Jack Black) entices her with a lead role. Dazzled by the genius of screenwriter Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody), Ann boards the tramp steamer S.S. Venture, which she--and most of the wary crew--believes is headed for Singapore. Denham, however, is in search of the mythic Skull Island, hoping to capture its wonders on film and make a fortune. What he didn't count on were some scary natives who find that the comely Darrow looks like prime sacrifice material for a mysterious giant creature....

There's no point in rehashing the entire plot, as every movie aficionado is more than familiar with the trajectory of King Kong; the challenge facing Jackson, his screenwriters, and the phenomenal visual-effects team was to breathe new life into an old, familiar story. To that degree, they achieve what could be best called a qualified success. Though they've assembled a crackerjack supporting cast, including Thomas Kretschmann as the Venture's hard-bitten captain and young Jamie Bell as a plucky crewman, the first third of the movie is rather labored, with too much minute detail given over to sumptuous re-creations of '30s New York and the unexciting initial leg of the Venture's sea voyage. However, once the film finds its way to Skull Island (which bears more than a passing resemblance to LOTR's Mordor), Kong turns into a dazzling movie triumph, by turns terrifying and awe-inspiring. The choreography and execution of the action set pieces--including one involving Kong and a trio of Tyrannosaurus Rexes, as well as another that could be charitably described as a bug-phobic's nightmare--is nothing short of landmark filmmaking, and a certain Mr. Spielberg should watch his back, as Kong trumps most anything that has come before it.

Despite the visual challenges of King Kong, the movie's most difficult hurdle is the budding romance between Ann and her simian soulmate. Happily, this is where Jackson unqualifiedly triumphs, as this unorthodox love story is tenderly and humorously drawn, by turns sympathetic and wondrous. Watts, whose accessibility balances out her almost otherworldly loveliness, works wonders with mere glances, and Andy Serkis, who digitally embodies Kong here much as he did Gollum in the LOTR films, breathes vibrant life into the giant star of the film without ever overplaying any emotions. The final, tragic act of the film, set mostly atop the Empire State Building, is where Kong earns its place in movie history as a work that celebrates both the technical and emotional heights that film can reach. --Mark Englehart

Obsolete Technology

Most people today, by the content of most letters would consider a person a cynic or a pessimist. And I can not disagree. But there are good reasons why.

It is not the progress of this country and the world have in many areas. It is the way we use them and rely on them. But today, I am not going to the people, but fix the slow useful inventions that have done their job. As I said in the past, it is not so much created the elements contained inQuestion, but how they are used and hung. But not today.

The VCR was one of the greatest inventions in home entertainment that had ever seen. Notice I said "was". Many people have one or two in their homes. But how long will it take before they throw them away. Are you sure you have acquired not in a position to sell them. DVD and digital recording. Practically the same is the DVR, that most people have heard, if not to their homes, far from those who used anyWatch a TV show, movie or series that they either do not have time to see, or they are not at home when it airs. The VCR can also record shows he put on a timer. But as everyone has learned that if you ever have the same tape over and over wears them, over a period of very short time.

The DVD player at a time, was considered to be overly expensive, but the videos are introduced essentially still the same price as at the first. Not infrequently, however,Considering that you now pay only one third of the price of a DVD movie to a DVD player now costs is surprising, but I have, there is no real reason.

It is the convenience that makes people happy. Not that they are waiting for the tape, rewind, do not worry if the tape is not chewed up on viewing. And now many people have realized how bulky and cumbersome is a video. It will take up twice the room like a DVD movie, and again in the course of time the tapebegins to deteriorate when it is observed or not. And then you have no choice but to throw them away.

I have spoken with many people about the transition from VCR to DVD. And my decision was made for this ...

"At first I rented" The Matrix "on video cassette. And I say that I have been impressed very satisfied with the movie. When I came back to save the video, I never thought to ask whether there are any copies for sale. The following day I went with the intention of buying the film onVideo. The first place I looked, they had only the DVD version available. I asked the seller, where was the video version, I was told it would not be for another 3 to 4 months are available. I was surprised, but not complain, but I bought the DVD version. I did not have a DVD player, but I had the film. Long story short, I went back and bought a DVD player. Excited with anticipation, as the film would look and sound to my stereo, I neverThought to ask whether my TV was compatible. It was not. The next day I went out and bought a brand new TV. And spent the whole evening saw the movie and all special features. "

Thus, twenty U.S. dollars venture turned out to cost me about six hundred. And I must say, is worth it.

There are now more updated and advanced players out there, like the Blu-ray DVD player and HD DVD, be honest, I can not really make the difference, with the exception ofOf course the amount of content that can be placed on a disk. It will probably take place for a while before the transition from DVD to Blue Ray. until then I am sure that most people remain satisfied with the standard DVD.

TVs are the same, flat panel displays, high-definition and plasma televisions. indeed, they are much better quality than the old pixel TVs and video displays give a much better picture. But many expect consumers because most do not with DVDPlayers, for the prices to fall. After the passage of time look at these old TV only pixels for good films. The transition to digital television is rapidly gaining ground.

Digital Cameras. Who would have ever guessed that after taking a picture that you would never have to utter the words: "I hope it comes out." never again.

The digital camera can make ten times the photos that can be a normal film camera. Not only that, but you can preview the images and decide whetherYou need to repeat the photo or delete them. Here you can see the lights, motion, etc. Setting the shutter speed by pressing a button, versus adapting three or four different buttons on a normal camera. With all the changes made to the computer, you can now make the same pictures and upload them on your computer. It's not all. The same photos can be adapted for light, cut and cut, and called in a photo album on your computer, you can design be placed. So much for the physicalPhoto albums. And now you do not have to wait four or five days are designed for the film.

Lets go a bit further. Printer / Scanner old photographs can you clean them and print them on photo paper, even if the image was taken place a decade ago. So no more loading of the film, where it develops and, above all, no more frustration of pictures that are not eligible.

So the progress was in the rest home TV and photography very successful and useful. Thereare a lot of people out there who would agree. With these devices has, watching movies and photography easier and more fun involved and leaves much of the work in devices of yesterday. So yeah .. update. These are the inventions that have their place for the utility in the world of entertainment and recreation.

World Trade Center (2-Disc Commemorative Edition) [HD DVD]

World Trade Center (2-Disc Commemorative Edition) [HD DVD] Review

This is an awesome movie. I recommend it. This movie is made even better if seen in high definition. I gotta say I love the HD revolution. It's almost as good as being in a theater.

World Trade Center (2-Disc Commemorative Edition) [HD DVD] Feature

World Trade Center (2-Disc Commemorative Edition) [HD DVD] Overview

Regardless of whether it was "too early" in 2006 to dramatize the events of September 11th, 2001, World Trade Center succeeds as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served at "ground zero" in the wake of terrorist attacks on the WTC's twin towers in New York City. Removed from the politics of war and terrorism (yet still, like all films, inherently political in expressing its point of view), Oliver Stone's potent drama focuses on the nightmarish ordeal, and subsequent rescue, of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), who were buried deeply within the rubble of the WTC after the twin towers collapsed. Granted, it's only the film's historical context that distinguishes it from any other dramatic rescue story, but in focusing on the goodness of humanity in response to the evil of terrorists who remain unnamed and off-screen, Stone and first-time screenwriter Andrea Berloff create an emotional context as powerful as anything Stone has directed since Platoon. Even as he resorts to some questionable tactics typically lacking in subtlety, Stone refrains from much of the blunt-force filmmaking that has made him a critical punching bag, rising to this challenging occasion with a heartfelt and deeply American portrait of unity - personal, familial, and national. Flaws and all, World Trade Center serves an honorable purpose, reminding us all that for those fleeting days in September 2001, America showed its best face to a sympathetic world. --Jeff Shannon

World Trade Center (2-Disc Commemorative Edition) [HD DVD] Specifications

"World Trade Center is a film about heroism and the best in all of us," raves Good Morning America's Joel Siegel. Academy Award winner, Nicolas Cage stars in the unforgettable true story of the courageous rescue and survival of two Port Authority policemen who were trapped in the rubble on September 11, 2001 after they volunteered to go in and help. Academy Award winning director, Oliver Stone reveals an intimate look at the events of the day as seen through the eyes of the survivors, their families and their rescuers

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [HD DVD]

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [HD DVD] Review

This is a great movie. It is different than the mainstream, but I really liked it as did my kids. If you like movies that are filmed differently than than the Hollywood "standard" you will like this movie.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [HD DVD] Feature

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [HD DVD] Overview

While setting a milestone in the progress of digital filmmaking, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow resurrects a nostalgic fantasy world derived from a wide variety of vintage inspirations. It's a dazzling dream for anyone who appreciates the look and feel of golden-age sci-fi pulp magazines, drawing its unique, all-digital design from such diverse sources as Howard Hawks adventures, Fritz Lang's Metropolis, Buck Rogers, Blackhawk comics, The Third Man, cliffhanger serials, and the action-packed Indiana Jones franchise. Writer-director Kerry Conran's feature debut is also guaranteed to inspire digital dreamers everywhere, suggesting a paradigm shift in the way CGI-dominated movies are made. It's a giddy adventure for the young and young-at-heart, in which ace pilot "Sky Captain" Joe Sullivan (Jude Law) and intrepid reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) must save the world from a mad scientist whose vision of the future has tragic implications for all humankind. Angelina Jolie drops in for a glorified cameo, but it's the ultra-fortunate neophyte Conran who's the star here. His clever riff on The Wizard of Oz is a marvel to behold, and the method of its creation is nothing less than revolutionary. --Jeff Shannon

Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines [HD DVD]

Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines [HD DVD] Review

Schwarzenegger is in pro form and loving every minute of the fun. He makes this movie enjoyable. Love this and every movie and TV show associated with the Terminator mythology. On a side note I was happy to see the 1080p problem fixed. There is nothing like watching a Terminator movie in blu ray. Awesome movie and can't wait until Salvation is released with the R rated version.

Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines [HD DVD] Feature

Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines [HD DVD] Overview

With a reported budget of 2 million, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines starts in high gear and never slows down. The apocalyptic "Judgment Day" of T2 was never prevented, only postponed: John Connor (Nick Stahl, replacing T2's Edward Furlong), now 22 and disconnected from society, is being pursued yet again, this time by the advanced T-X, a sleek "Terminatrix" (coldly expressionless Kristanna Loken) programmed to stop Connor from becoming the savior of humankind. Originally programmed as an assassin, a disadvantaged T-101 cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger, bidding fond farewell to his signature role) arrives from the future to join Connor and his old acquaintance Kate (Claire Danes) in thwarting the T-X's relentless pursuit. The plot presents a logical fulfillment of T2 prophesy, disposing of Connor's mother (Linda Hamilton is sorely missed) while computer-driven machines assume control, launching a nuclear nightmare that Connor must survive. With Breakdown and U-571 serving as worthy rehearsals for this cautionary epic of mass destruction, director Jonathan Mostow wisely avoids any stylistic connection to James Cameron's Terminator classics; instead he's crafted a fun, exciting popcorn thriller, humorous and yet still effectively nihilistic, and comparable to Jurassic Park III in returning the Terminator franchise to its potent B-movie roots. --Jeff Shannon

Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines [HD DVD] Specifications

A decade has passed since John Connor (NICK STAHL) helped prevent Judgment Day and save mankind from mass destruction. Now 25, Connor lives "off the grid" - no home, no credit cards, no cell phone and no job. No record of his existence. No way he can be traced by Skynet - the highly developed network of machines that once tried to kill him and wage war on humanity. Until, out of the shadows of the future steps the T-X (KRISTANNA LOKEN), Skynet's most sophisticated cyborg killing machine yet. Sent back through time to complete the job left unfinished by her predecessor, the T-1000, this machine is as relentless as her human guise is beautiful. Now Connor's only hope for survival is the Terminator (ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER), his mysterious former assassin. Together, they must triumph over the technologically superior T-X and forestall the looming threat of Judgment Day - or face the apocalypse and the fall of civilization as we know it.

Blades of Glory [HD DVD]

Blades of Glory [HD DVD] Review

As far as Will Ferrell goes, this is a solid 4 of 5 or 8 of 10...

Step Brothers (Single-Disc Unrated Edition) is better and Kicking and Screaming is the worst...This is in the middle.

A definate own for any Will Ferrell Collection.

Blades of Glory [HD DVD] Feature

Blades of Glory [HD DVD] Overview

Dreamworks Blades Of Glory - HD-DVD
"'Blades Of Glory' is pure hilarity, a gold medal comedy winner" staringcomic superstar Will Ferrell (Talladega Nights) and John Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). Bitter figure skating rivals Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) andJimmy MacElroy (Heder) brawl after tying for the gold medal at the world championships. Banned for life from men?s competition, these archrivals beatthe system thanks to a loophole that allows them skate again ? in pairs competition!.

Blades of Glory [HD DVD] Specifications

Take two male figure skaters, throw in a preposterous storyline, and you've got Blades of Glory, a surprisingly funny film that almost makes you forgive Will Ferrell for his back-to-back 2005 clunkers Kicking & Screaming and Bewitched. This time around, Ferrell eats the scenery in his role as a sex-addicted, cocky skating champ named Chazz Michael Michaels. When he gets into an on-podium fight with his nemesis and co-gold medallist Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite), both skaters are banned from competing in men's figure-skating events. Forever. Their fall from grace is brutal. Chazz is forced to work for a D-list skating show, while pampered Jimmy is disowned by his wealthy and cold-hearted adoptive father (excellently played by William Fichtner), who only wants to be around winners. When Jimmy points out that he tied for gold, his dad cruelly says, "If I wanted to share, I would've bought you a brother." Flash forward 3-1/2 years and Jimmy's No. 1 stalker Hector (Nick Swardson) says he's found a loophole. Jimmy's been banned from men's singles events, but there's nothing that says he can't compete in pairs skating. After a chance meeting with Chazz, mayhem ensues as the two rivals team up to go against the brother-and-sister team of Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (played by Will Arnett and his real-life wife, Amy Poehler of Saturday Night Live and Mean Girls fame). The Van Waldenbergs will stop at nothing to beat the competition, even if that means literally beating up the competition. They have no qualms manipulating their sweet little sister (Jenna Fischer, The Office) to seduce both men to try to break up the team.

The finale will be no surprise to moviegoers who know that comedies like this aren't set up to make its leading men losers. But there is one brief skating sequence set in North Korea that will surprise (and shock) many viewers because of its brutality. Ferrell and Heder make a great comedy team. Though he has been accused of playing the same role since his breakthrough performance in Napoleon Dynamite and, to a certain extent, plays a similar type of role here, Heder is spot-on as Jimmy. He manages to convey innocence, bitterness, and longing--all within the span of a few seconds and while wearing a peacock unitard (You can understand why Hector is so enthralled with him). Look for guest appearances by real-life skating champs Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Nancy Kerrigan, and Sasha Cohen, who gets to sniff Chazz's jockstrap. --Jae-Ha Kim

Chronos [HD DVD] Overview

Taking the familiar conventions of time-lapse cinematography to a transcendent level of artistic achievement, filmmaker Ron Fricke circled the globe to make Chronos, a stunning 70-millimeter time-lapse tour of natural and man-made wonders. The entire film has the enhanced, hyper-realistic quality of a laser-etched photograph, and by using special cameras and motion-control photographic techniques, Fricke and his technically expert crew were able to create mesmerizing images guaranteed to spark any viewer's sense of awe and wonder. Accompanied by the hypnotic music of Michael Stearns, this visual journey takes the viewer on a tour of over 50 locations on nearly every continent of the world, including explorations of Paris, the Vatican, the Egyptian pyramids, the African veldt, and many more stunning vistas. The cumulative effect is the feeling that the world--from the busiest metropolis to the most serenely remote wilderness landscape--is dictated by "chronos," the rhythm of time to which all living things must submit. Difference Between 1080i And 1080p

If you have a high-definition TV (HDTV), there are a number of factors to consider, you have chosen. Some things to consider are: Do you like the look of the TV is, they fit into your room and then a lot of technical things that make the eyes glaze, or perhaps really might interest you. This article explains some of the technical details, especially the image resolution and the way the image is created on the screen. Image resolution and scanning are neatly summedby figures such as 1080i and 1080p. We will discuss what these numbers mean, some other types of image types available, and the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

The 1080-bit refers to the image resolution. Both 1080i and 1080p have the same image resolution. This means there are 1920 pixels, which is the screen and 1080 pixels on the screen. This is equivalent to 1920 x 1080 pixels on the screen in total. For some reason the industry uses only the number of pixels in theScreen as a reference to the image resolution. 1080 pixel resolution is the best thing you get at the moment. Other types of resolution are 720p (x 1280 720), 480p (720 x 480) and 480i (640 x 480).

The i-and p-type bit the way is put the image on the screen, or scan type. The i stands for interlaced. Interlaced scanning is an older method by the image on the screen. It is more common in older style CRT TVs. The p stands for progressive and is the modern way to sharethe image on the screen.

The picture comes on the screen very quickly, but the advancing technology is smoother and less than the flickering interlaced method. Thus, it is claimed that the picture will be better using the progressive method, however, is barely perceptible in his eyes. It may also be better for fast action movies or fast changes in the picture, but here it is questionable whether this will pick up the eye.

1080p the best is what you get in the momentRegarding the latest technology. It allows you to burn the most of the next-generation DVDs, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

1080i the best current standard for HD television is used.

Thus, only 1080i and 1080p mean, how clear the picture will be displayed on the screen and how quickly placed the image on the screen.

The Untouchables (Special Collector's Edition) [HD DVD]

The Untouchables (Special Collector's Edition) [HD DVD] Review

Great movie... I'm not sure if the Blu-ray edition is quite different from the DVD, but it's nice.

The Untouchables (Special Collector's Edition) [HD DVD] Feature

The Untouchables (Special Collector's Edition) [HD DVD] Overview

As noted critic Pauline Kael wrote, the 1987 box-office hit The Untouchables is "like an attempt to visualize the public's collective dream of Chicago gangsters." In other words, this lavish reworking of the vintage TV series is a rousing potboiler from a bygone era, so beautifully designed and photographed--and so craftily directed by Brian De Palma--that the historical reality of Prohibition-era Chicago could only pale in comparison. From a script by David Mamet, the movie pits four underdog heroes (the maverick lawmen known as the Untouchables) against a singular villain in Al Capone, played by Robert De Niro as a dapper caesar holding court (and a baseball bat) against any and all challengers. Kevin Costner is the naive federal agent Eliot Ness, whose lack of experience is tempered by the streetwise alliance of a seasoned Chicago cop (Sean Connery, in an Oscar-winning performance), a rookie marksman (Andy Garcia), and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith) who holds the key to Capone's potential downfall. The movie approaches greatness on the strength of its set pieces, such as the siege near the Canadian border, the venal ambush at Connery's apartment, and the train-station shootout partially modeled after the "Odessa steps" sequences of the Russian classic Battleship Potemkin. It's thrilling stuff, fueled by Ennio Morricone's dynamic score, but it's also manipulative and obvious. If you're inclined to be critical, the movie gives you reason to complain. If you'd rather sit back and enjoy a first-rate production with an all-star cast, The Untouchables may very well strike you as a classic. --Jeff Shannon

Black Snake Moan [HD DVD]

Black Snake Moan [HD DVD] Review

A very hot, steamy video. Very good acting and a hot, humid atmosphere. Well worth watching. A keeper. The music is great, and Ricci and Jackson do a great acting job.

Black Snake Moan [HD DVD] Feature

Black Snake Moan [HD DVD] Overview

Paramount Black Snake Moan (HD-DVD)
When ex-blues musician Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson) finds the town nymphomaniac Rae (Christina Ricci) left for dead on the side of the road, he vows to nurse her back to health...and cure her of her wickedness. Until then, she'll be chained to the immovable radiator in his home. But Lazarus has demons of his own: his wife just left him for his own brother. While Lazarus and Rae struggle to fix their broken lives, the situation threatens to explode as Rae's boyfriend Ronnie (Justin Timberlake) - a roughneck soldier just back from Iraq - comes searching for his missing lover.

Black Snake Moan [HD DVD] Specifications

The lurid scenario--a nymphomaniacal white trash nymphet (Christina Ricci) is held prisoner by a bitter bluesman (Samuel L. Jackson)--gives way to an affecting tale of redemption in Black Snake Moan, writer/director Craig Brewer's follow-up to the acclaimed Hustle & Flow. Lazarus (Jackson, Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction) finds Rae (Ricci, Monster, The Ice Storm) beaten unconscious on the road in front of his backwoods house. After bringing her inside, he learns of her wanton ways and decides to exorcise his own demons by curing Rae of her sexual compulsion. Black Snake Moan could have been terrible, but Brewer takes his story seriously enough to dig into the genuine emotions of such a situation (though along the way he certainly flirts with sexploitation overtones--several scenes look like they were plucked straight out of a hitherto unknown 1970s trash classic). Ricci, Jackson, and the supporting cast (including pop star Justin Timberlake, giving a surprisingly good performance as Rae's boyfriend) treat the characters with respect, honesty, and humor. The result is off-kilter and maybe a little too fond of its sleazy cinematic forbears to truly hit the emotional notes it's after, but Black Snake Moan has considerably more substance than its marketing would suggest. --Bret Fetzer

Jailhouse Rock [HD DVD]

Jailhouse Rock [HD DVD] Review

This shows how Elvis could have been a great actor, but he became "Parkerized" into a joke. This is a great movie you should own in any form, vhs, dvd, or hd.

Jailhouse Rock [HD DVD] Feature

Jailhouse Rock [HD DVD] Overview

Elvis Presley's third and best film is this musical romp released in 1957, just as the Big "E" was reaching the peak of his hip-swiveling pre-army success. Filmed in ultra-cool black and white, the movie stars Elvis as a good ol' boy who saves a woman from an assault but kills her attacker, so he's convicted of manslaughter and sent to jail. While doing time he takes up the guitar and becomes a singing sensation, ready for the big time when he's finally released. He becomes a big star but his inflated ego gets him into trouble with his former cellmate and his new girlfriend. Short on plot but heavy on rock & roll, this EP classic features such hit songs as "Treat Me Nice," "Baby, I Don't Care," "Don't Leave Me Now," and, of course, the classic title song, performed in an elaborate jailhouse number that Elvis choreographed himself. This is Elvis in all his big-screen glory, and the movie's upbeat ending made it a huge success during its original release. --Jeff Shannon

HDTV Enters the Fourth Dimension - 120Hz Frame Rates

There is much talk these days about the frame rates in the new HDTVs. The frame rate is simply the number of different pictures of a TV screen can display in a second, and is also known as an indicator or set of "Hertz". Hertz is the scientific unit for cycles per second and is abbreviated "Hz". The latest buzzword is "120 Hz", a display of 120 frames per second. This is twice as fast as most of HDTV (60Hz) that are capable of, so it should look beautiful at the moving pictures. But,The human eye can only process should be about 20 to 25 different images per second, which is why it does not matter what the framerate, as long as it is quicker than the eye can see?

The answer comes when you know that is not shot any video with the same speed. Movies are usually filmed at a rate of 24 Hz, which is filmed on television, the most at 30 Hz, and some sporting events are now at 60 Hz filmed.

Some simple math will show the problem, and cover the solution. When a TV screen wants to generate 60Frames per second, and the cable-television companies, he sends 30 frames per second, which is easily met: the TV shows each frame twice in a row, making an image of two consecutive frames. Each image is exactly 1/30th of a second on the screen recently, and things will look completely smooth.

So what happens if your DVD player sends 24 frames per second to the TV, but the TV will still show up to 60 on the screen? This is a little slower than cable TV frame rate, so that when itsimply shows each frame twice, and then waits for the next, there is a gap between black and the movie looks terrible. So the TV has a frame triple, double the next, three times the following, and so on, there is show a total of 60 frames per second. This is known as 3:2 pulldown.

The 3:2 pulldown trick works OK, but it is a problem. A picture takes 20th a second, then take the next 30th book. 20. One second is long enough for most people to say thatit's really a static image, and when the camera pans around in a scene, things will seem to move unevenly. But if your TV is able to display 120 frames per second, it can take the 24 Hz input and simply show each frame 5 times in a row for a total of 1/24 (or 5/120) second per frame, with no variation from frame to frame. And when 30Hz video comes in, it displays each frame 4 times in a row, for a total of 1/30 (or 4/120) second per frame. Problem solved.

Now that frame rates are fast enough to any kind of input display smoothly, HDTVs not only a high resolution in X and Y (height and width) dimensions, but also in the t (time) dimension. As in all types of digital media means a higher resolution, smaller units of data, and that natural reproduction does the reality. The 120 Hz frame rate is not very common, until 2008, but some have already HDTVs, such as the Sony Bravia XBR4 series and the Sharp Aquos 92U-series.

HDTV has certainly) in the fourth dimension (time, but has skipped the third (depth) in the process. Until we begin to see holographic films on DVD, we have to wait for a real four-dimensional TV.
